CSS / 1.6 - which to play?

Well, after stopping WoW after the better part of two years, i want to move on to another game i can play 'seriously'. I've played CSS on and off since release, only stopping playing it majorly when i first picked up WoW, and prior to that, played 1.5/6 for about a year.

I want to join a clan and join leagues etc, but can't decided which version to play.

Since the release of source, i've constantly heard from 1.6 players about scource's;

-laggy hitboxes
-too many/to easy for noobs
-not as good community as 1.6

i don't want to start playing source only to find i wouldv'e been better off in 1.6 or vica versa, but the above arguments all seem b******* to me. I downloaded some pro clan vids from both games from the 'best frags' thread and http://www.enemydown.co.uk/ and see little difference aside graphics.

I can play css fully maxed out, with more than high enough fps, so should i bother with 1.6?

what are 1.6/source players opinions?

and, slightly off-topic;

can anyone recommend any uk/eu public servers where 'decent' players play, so as i can see how good/bad i actually am? (as said in the 'best frags' thread, i've no idea how to rate myself, so i'd like to play with some people from decent clans).

cheers in advance

1.6 has a delicate crispness about it. There's no physics on anything, it's just about shooting a target. I can't really describe why it's better, but it just is.

Have a go on both, you might like source but I have yet to feel the same feeling as when you get headshot after headshot in 1.6.

:Edit: Hmm I should read really. Didn't realise you'd tried both. They are more or less identical, it's just down to personal preference/experience really.

Source just seems a bit "fluffy" to me though.

Not sure if I'm remembering the name right but I think Dustworld 24/7 was a pretty good server. Always got a good amount of players and they're normally not too bad.

I've played Source since release and also quite a bit of 1.6. Sure 1.6 is good and always will be known as the best online-multiplayer FPS, but it's time people move on!

I would suggest just sticking with Source. Nicer graphics, gameplay isn't as bad as people think! If anything, Source reflects more of 1.5 and CS:Beta in my opinion.

you wil get different opinions from different people, i play CSS and enjoy it, playing in various leagues and apart from the "script kiddies" and the "mixing heroes" i dont find the community that bad, there are a lot of decent people around :)

1.6, it's as simple as that.

Yeah. To be perfectly honest though, it's up to you. I hear CPL and CAL are still using 1.6, but what about LANs and Tourneys over here in the UK? That could swing it one way or the other. I'd expect most decent players still play 1.6. I've recently fired it up a couple of times and it may be rose-tinted glasses but it still is a fun game. The graphics arent bad enough to warrant putting up with the jelly that is known as Sauce gameplay. :)

If you want to play CS 'seriously' you'd better be aware that there's a lot more to it than what i know of WoW. It involves scrimming every night etc.. getting known enough in 'the scene' to have the UKs best clans play you, and most importantly it means going to LANs and proving your worth. There's just no such thing as playing public CS 'seriously'. It doesnt exist.

Oh, if you want to rate your aim in public, just join any Scanadinavian server during the daytime. If you break even, you're not half bad ;):p

cheers for the input, suppose i'll have to play 1.6 a bit more and see if it grabs me.

re: WoW / time involved, wow was a 6 hours a day minimum, 6 days a week for approx 18 months, and more often than not playing much more than that.

and @ scam - nice fraps in the 'best frags' thread btw ;)

I started on source and now am totally unable to enjoy 1.6. It just feels wrong, much like zefan thinks source feels fluffy.

Play both equally is the trick! :D (How's that for a new outlook! :D )

He's got no chance of playing at any decent level for at least a year anyways. Most of the tournaments over here are still 1.6, the SCAN qualifiers have started now which should be a decent LAN we'll hopefully be attending :)
