Does anyone know of software /website that you can test your website in regards to the handheld css media type being used?

Possibly the Firefox Web Developer extension might be helpful. I'm not on the right machine to tell you for sure though.

Yea, it has a 'small screen' option under misc.

Since I and most people use Opera on their phones, I like to use Opera's Small Screen Rendering feature. Hit Shift + F11 when viewing a web page to switch to small screen rendering.

The handheld media type is still a bit sketchy. I would create a subdomain of the site or different folder, find a way to include the main content but adjust the main stylesheet (with the all media type) to suit a handheld device.
