Probably a silly question but when i return to my Ctek MXS 5 it is showing a flashing red light (called error lamp in manual), i looked this up in the manual and seems to point to a battery fault or connection fault, but when turned off and on again it passes all tests and charges the battery upto stage 8 with no problems

This charger should enter trickle mode, is this it and not well explained in the manual (looking at the manual stage 8 is trickle so would 8 green light on etc) or an actual fault, it has been doing it since the battery was brand new so shouldn't be a battery fault.

Just getting annoying keep resetting the charger, might put it on a timer plug to do it for me

Thanks

Stage 8 is maintenance charge so it applies short pulses every couple of fractions of a second to keep it topped up. If the red light only appears during this stage I would not worry too much, but you leaving a lead acid continuously with a maintenance charge is not really recommended. Leaving it for 12 - 24 hrs is okay, but much longer will lead to problems.

The system might be detecting a voltage drop during fully charged state, the impedance might suggest the battery is on the way out. The charger will still try and charge a battery safely (slowly) if it was on its way out.
