hey there.

I just upgraded my GPU from a GTX 470 to a GTX 670 FTW and well i am not very impressed with the difference i am receiving on fps. sure i can play games like battlefield 3, skyrim and far cry 2 on maximum settings compared to the 470 i previously had.

However its not performing the way i expect it to and i think my cpu might be holding it back. i play a lot of games and some games like GTA4 and batman arkham aslyum are giving me low fps. batman ranges from 45-62 fps and GTA4 is around 30-40 fps crisis 1 around 40 average.

i have searched around the net and found benchmarks reporting that the 670 ftw preforms much higher than what i am. i have tried 3d mark and i score around P6000 and graphics 8400

anyway i was wondering if i were to replace my cpu would the performance increase?

my specs are:

GA H55M-UD2H motherboard
Intel core i3 530 @2.9ghz over-clocked to 3.6ghz
12gb ram 1600mhz
gtx 670ftw 1006mhz stock speed over-clocked to 1200mhz
600 watt power supply

also i have noticed that the gpu clock speed fluctuates a bit, sometimes it changes from 1006mhz, to 800mhz and then 302mhz. How can i get it constantly run at the hiest clock speed, preferably my over-clock speed at 1200mhz

thanks in advanced

As a cheap upgrade, you could search for a used i5 7XX or i7 8XX Lynnfield based 1156 CPU to drop into your existing setup. Alternatively, you could buy a new CPU and mobo and get a 3570k with a Z77 board. The GPU frequency will downclock at idle just like the CPU does with speedstep enabled in order to save power and reduce idle temps.

Depends on the game, for newer games that can make use of the 4 cores of the i5 7xx and i7 8xx CPUs, it'll make a fair difference. If you can upgrade cheaply, then I'd say go for it. i5 750s sell for about £60 on the MM, so it's a cheap upgrade option.

My 760 is not holding back my GTX670 at all. In fact, in the Heaven and Valley benchmark threads i have beaten 2500k's and 3570k's. :D

As a stop gap before spending money you can raise the overclock on your i3 to 4-4.2GHz.

Yours does have a 600MHz advantage over a stock 3570K and a 800MHz advantage over a stock 2500K though, which I suppose highlights what awesome value the first gen i3/5/7 CPU's are atm :)

I can say an i7 860 won't hold you back when overclocked. Mine doesnt appear to bottleneck my 7970 and I don't need to upgrade to Haswell, so I can say it is a good upgrade to get an 860 and clock it.

I would say get yourself a i5 7xx or i7 8xx as they are enough to push your gtx 670. I have just moved from my pc in sig to an i5 3570k and the difference in games is small to be honest. As long as you can overclock it (i5 7xx or i7 8xx) to atleast 3.6ghz you wont be bottlenecking your gtx 670.

Most of them in the benchmark threads are overclocked as well, which just shows even more how awesome these were when launched. Going to keep mine for a long time yet. :D

Heaven and Valley benchmark are also nealy 98% GPU dependent. That's why the difference in CPU type and overclocked or not has nearly zero influence.
