Curious internet issue

Hi everyone,

I seem to have developed a fairly interesting internet problem. When my computer is in use (i.e. the display has not been turned off by power management), I cannot access the internet or router (checked via ping requests). As soon as the display is turned off, I can access the internet anh router once again. The connection is wireless: WPA-PSK.

The internet started being unreliable a couple of days ago. It's possible a Windows Update affected it; I've tried System Restore but that was unable to restore anything.

I'm running Windows 7 build 7000 x64. I've tried disabling my internet security program (Windows Firewall is not enabled either), configuring all the network settings manually (rather than automatically detecting settings), disabling and re-enabling my network adapter, and of course restarting, none of which has worked.

My analysis so far is that the problem is not with the router (my laptop connects fine), but I have very little idea where to proceed from here. If anyone's got any ideas about how to fix it, I'd be grateful to hear them.

Thanks

Rob

Have a look in event viewer see if there are any clues there, most likely under tcp/ip errors or warnings.

Thanks for your reply.
There are warning messages every few minutes stating: "Your computer was not assigned an address from the network (by the DHCP server) for the Network Card with network address 0x00160A06F026". I've googled around the problem but can't find anything on how to fix it, plus I can't see how the display turning off should affect it.

OK I've just been fiddling around with my multiple monitor setup. Now this makes no sense at all. I have my projector at 1080p and my 24" at 1280x800 (it's underneath the projector). With this setting, internet doesn't work. However, if I change the resolution of the 24" to anything other than 1280x800, it starts working again. It sounds crazy, but there must be some sort of bug actually interfering with the wireless connection when the 24" is set to that resolution.

OK, to conclude. With the projector set to any resolution, internet is fine. If I set my monitor to anything other than 1280x800, internet is fine. If I set my monitor to 1280x800 resolution, with or without the projector, the internet stops working.

Thanks for your help anyway, I'll just have to have a slightly higher resolution on my monitor.

Any wacko theories about why this might be happening? This is running Win 7 build 7000 x64 with an Atheros AR5005G Wireless Network Adapter and an 8800 GTX, connecting to the projector and monitor via HDMI and DVI.
