No changes, just a question on them.

From 0200hrs on the 22nd September 2006, the UK Department for Transport has lifted the hand baggage size restrictions. Each passenger is NOW permitted to carry ONE item of hand baggage up to 10kg with maximum dimensions of 55cm x 40cm x 20cm. These dimensions include the wheels, handles, side pockets, etc.

Which isn't as bad as it once was, but is still a bit stupid. I can understand why they would want to stop toiletries/liquids etc. But for what reason are they restricting baggage size? Surely the speed of the belt through the xray machine doesnt go that much slower with a bag slightly bigger.

Main question, are security anal about this? I'm trying my best but the bag I want to take though is going to be about 1-2cm too thick... :S I know I shouldn't really chance it but its just such a pain in the arse.

The current baggage size restrictions are now the same as they were before all this hassle started, the only difference is that at some airports they're being a lot stricter on dimensions - actually making you use the daft wee frame things.

Where are you flying from and with whom?

The general restrictions from the airlines were much larger than the stupid ones they have now. And that was only a guide anyway, they could be considerate and just let you with if if you wanted.

Also I just read on another site another dimension set :s
"The new size limit for carry-on luggage will increase to 56cm x 45cm x 25cm"

Who is right?

Out > Luton > Budapest - Wizzair
In > Budapest > Luton - Easyjet (ack)

Ah, it doesn't seem to be that bad. checked on the dft site and it gives the larger 25cm size, which is fine enough for me.

DFT > ONE item only of cabin baggage is permitted through the airport security search point, the dimensions of this item must not exceed: a maximum length of 56 cm, width of 45 cm and depth of 25 cm (including wheels, handles, side pockets etc.). Other bags, such as handbags, may be carried within the single item of cabin baggage. All items carried by passengers will be x-ray screened.

The 56x45x25 size is the IATA/DfT standard which in the past has been bent/broken/ignored by airlines and airports in the past as it has meant a reduction in hold baggage and hence cost to airlines.

Other than the liquid ban the limit on 1 piece is a real pain in the rear, I spent all of last year and a lot of this flying once a week with a small holdall and a laptop bag. Doing that I could be out of the airport and on my way to work/home before the hold bags hit the belt, now I have to check the holdall :(

This is my problem, I want to take the laptop with me into the lounge, onto the flight etc but the 1 bag is annoying, and I dont really want to buy another bag to suit right now.
