Current equivalent or better than an X1950Pro...

I had a guts full of the Saphire 1950Pro (256MB) fitted in my sons machine.

I thought I had cooling problems with it in stock configuration so replaced the HSF with a Accelero S1 Rev. 2 but now it's black screening when in games, the only error reported is an ATI related infinite loop. It'll sit for hours okay in Windows but a minute or two in a game and it's gone.

I took my time over fitting the cooler and I know I could fit a fan to that but, to be honest, I'm sick of this thing now and am just going to replace it with a naturally cooler card.

What's the minimum current equivalent performance wise I should be looking at, preferably will jump it over to an nVidia but if an ATI is still recommended then I'm willing to give them a second chance, just something that is better built cooling wise...

I'm a bit out of the loop with the later ATI cards etc. since I got my 8800GTX last year but the 3850Pros (256MB) for around £76 seem a good spec/£...?

Thanks all...

What about an 8800GTS (340MB) at £88.

I guess I'm looking at the best for less than £100 (I'm not ready to pass down my 8800GTX just yet...)

Cheers Greebo, posted at the same time...

Okay, so as to match the memory and make it fair...
It's between a 512MB 9600GT @ £96 or a 640MB 8800GTS @ £99 - what would you go for...? ;)

What about heat/power between the two?

Any issues on a Corsair 520W PSU...?

Should be fine I would have thought in which case will probably go with the 320MB GTS then since he's only going to be using 1280x1024...

So, go with the older/hotter G80 based GTS, pay more for the 'lower' model but newer/better core 8800GT or go for the newer model/core 9600GT...

(it's never simple is it... ;) )
