Current gen and next gen game releases

I did a search but couldn't find any threads so not sure if this has been asked before.

Is this the first time that game developers with forthcoming games that overlap the release of new consoles creating the same game for a different platform? Did they use to create a game for the next gen console only? There seems to be quite a few games like this.

Obviously at its core, it's a money making strategy but is this a new thing for the next gen consoles and something we can expect to see again with future consoles?

EDIT: Found some info on google, Microsoft are calling it the Xbox Game Ahead Program or Xbox GAP.

I guess certain games, hd remakes or fifa games have always been cross gen, but this time around it seems a lot more common, with games like cod and bf in the mix as well.

Ps3 will still get games for a few years.
