Current shape Honda Civic information

I found the turning circle on mine to be abysmal, easily worse than anyother comparable car I've driven.

I had a 147... an oil tanker could turn in a tighter space - so I'm basing it on that! :D

On a similar note, generally I found RWD cars to have an even better turning circle owing to being able to get a bigger lock on - but maybe that's just impression rather than fact.

Another thing that's worth commenting on is that it's not a physically tiring car to drive. All the controls, including the clutch, are light, the controls are well positioned, the driving position is spot on, and you sit lower down. After a 500 mile drive you never feel as if you need to have session with a chiropractor.

Agree with all of that bar the seating position, there's not enough adjustment IMO, and you can't lower the seat enough - however, in spite of that, I've done several thousands miles in a month with no issues in terms of comfort. :)

Have to say the dampers on the diesel are a little harsh - I've been told it's a little tough at the back - however, it does provide with good handling. Not sure what the 1.8 petrol will be like. Personally I prefer slightly stiffer suspension than softer.

I looked at all the contenders in this segment a year or so ago. Golf 6 is miles ahead in terms of interior quality, even better than the A3. The facelift focus is a decent bet inside and outside, but unless its a hot model, they just feel a bit average. The Civic is a strange car, its a funky interior but incredibly practical, I found it well put together, better than the Golf 5 and Focus ST, and both cars I spent a sizeable amount of time in.It still looks good aswell, but it does need to be a decent trim imo.

But I kinda agree with Corsa man, its poor value for money, I was simply looking at these cars from a company driver POV, ie dont care about purchase cost.

FWIW, the Honda Dealers are fantastic, much better than all the other marques ive experienced (Ford,PSA,Merc,VW,Audi).

Thanks all for you're input, I did sit in that car and was really disappointed, the exterior was in reasonable condition but the interior was very scruffy which was a shame.

As for Car Giant, it's fantastic. Instead of the dealer way where you always have to have a salesman yapping on about how great the car is, you swap your keys for the new car's keys and then you are free to look around it at your own leisure, open the bonnet - start it up and say what you really think about it to whoever you are with. It works really well - they even have a small free internet cafe which I used to get some insurance prices.

I did have a good look around at all the options, I was very impressed with the Golf - I sat in a sport model with big comfy leather seats and it all felt very well put together. Was very impressed :)

The 1.8 is fine. You notice the bumps in the road but its not uncomfortable. Great example of a car where they've got the damping right. Much, much better ride quality than the Golf V 2.0 TDi which has low profile tyres in stock form and 10mm lower suspension - the ride quality on that car was so bad that it kept on joggling loose my satnav from the suction mount on the windscreen.

Incidentally, I forgot to mention that some owners have reported some sort of problem with the rear dampers making a knocking sound. Apparently, there's an iffy batch knocking around in certain, possibly earlier, cars. It supposedly doesn't affect the driving but it sounds as if something's broken. Honda will replace them under warranty but obviously, you're screwed if you've bought a car where they haven't been replaced.

It was infinitely more comfortable than your 147 in the back though. The adjustable mirrors when parking seem like a pretty neat feature too.

Did you drive either to see which one you prefered?

See? And all those people flamed me for suggesting something like that ;)

Buy a Jetta - it's a Golf with a boot and thus MUCH better value.
