Current top dog(s) air cooling

Scythe Ninja without doubt.

Other contenders:
-Tuniq tower, apparently equils the ninja
-XP/SI 120 (not too tall)
-Arctic cooling freezer (low price)
-Zalman CPNS

Remember the fan you choose can make almost as much difference as the heatsink itself.

whatabout the thermaltake blue orb II, i have one and i find them highly under-rated, mine has faster spinning 120mm fan and it knocks 2*C off the idle temperature compaired to stock fan :)

Edit: 3200+ running at 2.85Ghz at 1.55V, 33*C idle with room temperature 28.5*C

It won't be anywhere near as good as the Ninja, and i believe its not as good as the zalmans it copies.

Your temps look a little too good to be true, dodgy thermal monitoring perhaps.
It should be folding anyway. see sig.

is the ninja just a fan, does it need a heatsink bought seperatley?

only asking as i will be purchasing a conroe system however i am looking at the big typhoon as this is a good price and has everything needed!

cheers

Have you actually looked at the ninja?
Its a heatsink and fan, and while the stock fan is fine a better one and some ducting can improve temps if you want the best air cooling out there.

If big typhoon is significantly cheaper it might be worth getting. It should perform quite well but i'm pretty sure they don't include a fan.

Should 'fan' and 'heatsink' be the other way round there? :p

The plus version comes with both.

Performance - Tuniq 120 + Panaflo or similar high performance fan (120x120x25 only)

Silence - Scythe Ninja + Nexus 120mm fan

It isnt quite as good but it does include a fan.

Only 2c? The fact it was so low with the stock cooling points to the sensor being faulty

Only worth getting if its a lot cheaper then.

Scythe Ninja + 38mm panaflo and duct to 38mm rear panaflo would beat the tuniq tower in both performance and performance/noise ratio.

No it wouldnt (probably the same, unless you did the same to the Tuniq then it would be better again), airflow makes little diference to that coolers performance because the fins are placed so far apart. Thats why it is so good at cooling silently, you dont need much airflow and therefore you need less noise.

I found a duct made a couple of degrees difference.
I'll go and have a look at the reviews for the Tuniq tower and see how it compares with the Ninja.

As far as I'm aware the Tuniq Tower betters the Scythe, but you'll be lucky to get your hands on one as the company that makes them is having manufacturing problems the last I heard.

Jokester

What about the Scythe Mime (That 'e' is ment to have a funny little accent thing I'm sure), I'm sure I read somewhere that it's better at cooling than the Ninja. I also believe it's cheaper (now), lighter, and smaller.

Then again, I could be wrong?

edit/ Oh, and easier to mount.

Xbit had a nice review with the Ninja and the Tuniq tower and perhaps even the Mine i can't remember, but its down atm. Each has its drawbacks and advantages, such as availability for the Tuniq tower and wide spaced fins for the Ninja, and a relatively loud non standard fan on the Mine iirc.

ok people i officially have a screwed sensor since temperature dropped to 3*C today and its 29.5*C outside, is this a known problem on asus A8N-SLI boards or not, cause its only a month old

I bought a Vapochill Micro Extreme. Let's say, dissapointed, or I'm just pushing it too much.

X6800 and I can't really get stable over 3.4, temps are about 31c-34c idle, which is GREAT, I could even clock to 3.8ghz and play bf2 and other things.

It's around 3.4ghz+ where I get these over 70c temps
But I can't run prime, or OCCT, as soon as I do, it takes about 2 seconds to reach 70c then goes up to about 74c where I went *NO* and stopped the test.

It's also a pain in the ass to install until you get the hang of it.
I applied too much AS5 first time till I read up on actually how to REALLY do it.

So I've ordered a Tuniq Tower 120, I hope I can squeeze a little more out, I hear of people at 3.8/3.9 on air, friend has a contact over msn who could either be *oi no swearing* or not, but yeah...

It seems Scythe Ninja/mine or Tuniq seems the awesomeness, if you have the room!

Yep if you can find one :/

What an absolute monster, no doubting the build quality it looks amazing.
