Hi Guys,

I have a pretty good PC bought from the fine people at OC. Can't recall the exact specs as I am typing this from work, but it's pretty decent apart from the 780 card which I guess it's fairly average.

I only game at 1080p as I play through my TV in the living room and for the most part all my games look and run very well. I do run a lot of games on high rather than ultra as I prefer the FPS over the quality.

I am thinking of an upgrade and the obvious choice is the 1070. However do you think it would make more sense to now "settle" for a 980ti as I can get one of them cheaper?

There are also some good deals on here for the "lesser" cards so I guess I am looking for a decent upgrade at the best price. All advice is extremely welcome as I am about a million miles away from being a PC tech head.

Many thanks.

Either will do you proud. A couple of new features on the 1070 like Ansel and single-pass simultaneous multi-projection but if you don't intend on going VR or Multi monitor and you have no interest in taking nice in-game pics, then the 980Ti is cheaper but does use more power (which will get hotter) but not really an issue.

If it's anything like the 780Ti and 970 scenario I would opt for the 1070. It's very likely it will pull further ahead over the next 12 months in upcoming titles/benches. Fast sync also goes in its favor which will be noticeable at 1080p and 60hz, which I presume you use. Not sure when the 980Ti will see this tech?

^ I'd echo what Drollic says above. The 1070 will likely see further driver optimisations that will allow it to pull ahead, whilst there's unlikely to be any further optimisations to squeeze out of the Maxwell driver path. It would also be easy (and more efficient) to pick up another 1070 should you wish to go SLI down the road too.

if going new..

please do not buy a 980 ti.

just add the extra £40 and get 2gb more ram, a more efficient chip
and more new features

I had a 1070 and 980ti, the 1070 is amazing in racing games, as soon as I played noticed it

in grid 2 / project cars

think its down to the new memory compression

would be stupid to buy a 980 ti new now .. used yes grab one for 300 if you can buy most look like 350

Hardly.

They're 359.99 new so 290-300 should be the new second hand price. The reason they're not lower at the moment is that a lot of people with 980ti's aren't selling yet as the 1080 isn't THAT much faster when both are overclocked. It's a good chunk faster but it ain't massive.

Overclocked firestrike 1080p preset GPU Scores:

GTX

1070 ~2GHz = 20K @ £400+
980Ti ~1.5GHz = 21K @ £360+
1080 ~2GHz = 24K @ £600+ LOL

I agree with him tbh. For £360, when a custom 1070 can be had for just £15 more, you'd be nuts to choose the 980 Ti unless you were going SLI on an existing one.

Another that seems to happen with Nvidia GPUs are older generations are not taken into consideration with the 970 outperforming the 780 ti in modern games like doom where the 780 ti should be outperforming slightly but instead the 970 outperforms the 780 ti easily so the 1070 is probably going to be the better choice.

Good call about the Kepler gimping, luckily Maxwell and Pascal are very similar architecturally so the only thing Pascal really can tout over it's older sibling will be a couple of fps extra under certain scenarios in DX12 from it's pre-emption.

Good for you :D

Custom 1070 stock isn't really that great though and being that to all intents and purposes the two cards are even, the 980ti is still a very good here and now option.

As the guy says above me though they're fairly similar architecture wise.

Without meaning to offend, synthetic benchmarks are just that, synthetic. I still place little value on anything that isn't a proper game benchmark, as (unless you do it for a living like 8pack!) nobody shells out £350-£500+ on a GPU to have a 3DMark score higher if it doesn't reflect in-game :)

Having said that, an OC'd 980ti is more or less the same as a boosted 1070, +/- a few frames or so, and with the latter in its infancy, it can only get better with drivers. Add in less power draw and the extra features+2GB buffer and it makes a bit more sense to get the newer product, which can be had with a very respectable AIB in the KFA2 EXOC for £375.

I've got a 980 Ti coming to me today from overclockers why not the 1070? Well pascal and maxwell are much more similar than Kepler and maxwell so drivers isn't an issue. If you clock a Ti up there on average it will be faster than the 1070 I sold my last Ti for £500 10 weeks ago and if I was to get an 1070 I'd be spending £420 on the msi considering I'm only keeping it till big pascal comes out I figured the Ti will offer me the best price to performance by far the only thing I'll miss is the extra 2gb VRAM but my last Ti done the job at 4K and I feel better for not blowing £600 on essentially what is baby pascal so glad I cancelled my FTW order :) looking forward to getting this bad boy in my system expecting half 1-half 2 :D
