As above, i am looking for a new tv currently we have a panasonic 50" actice 3d plasma flat screen tv smart but not as smart as some other brands by that i mean i cannot get netflx on my panny tv but can via my panny bluray player.

Anyway my local currys store has some reasonable offers, i only want to spend between 1k and 1500, after measuring some screens my now flat 50" is the same as a new 55" due to the screen border of my current tv.

i also saw a nice samsung 55" curved model SAMSUNG UE55KU6670 Smart 4k Ultra HD HDR 55" Curved LED TV going for £1100 which is quite a nice looking set are there any real benefits to curved screens what difference would i see?
would a 55" curve be better for example thatn a 60" flat screen?

any advice or tips welcome

Curved comes down to where you will be placing the TV. Not owned one myself but some like them some don't. Due to the viewing Angles. Think Curved is suited if you will be Sat faced in front of the screen. If it was me id go for flat screen. But its not me buying lol

that was one of the few articles of interest on the Gadget show, the experts they dragged in thought it was a gimmick (like 3d) , no benefit for the viewing experience and potential for reflections (if I remember right),
if the price is right though (bargain with them) then may be a good deal

My humble opinion:

Plasma was a wonderful display technology, and Pasasonic were very good at it. If you have a decent one, the odds are that it will surpass a modern lcd at the 1000 quid price point.

Lcd sets -even top of the range ones- suffer inherent quirks like backlight bleed, high black levels, dirty screen effect and haloing around bright objects. These are issues which are not evident in a TV showroom, but are more than visible in the home.

Recommendation: stick with your plasma whilst you save for an OLED.

This..

I wouldn't ditch my plasma for anything other than a top en OLED now. I'd stick it out and wait for the prices to fall.

Curved screens are only really suited to ultrawide monitors, large projector screens, or tvs if you're seated centrally and pretty close.

I've owned 2 panny plasmas both high end models (still got one of them), also owned a high end samsung plasma. I bought them because of their superior PQ for the money.

However if you want 4K OLED is ridiculously expensive atm. Also having owned and seen many top end LCD's in my own home and others. I would say the top end ones are really good now. By top end I mean a lot more than OP's budget. £2-£3K LCD's are brilliant and have absolute blacks thanks to FALD technology.

Also I don't believe the difference is as big as it once was. Thinking back to my PC monitors I've always owned IPS panels and sold a TN panel and went IPS last year because the colours were bad. LCD's with the right IPS or VA panel look extremely good. Some have their issues but if you do your research (hdtvtest and avforums) you can pick up a bargain of a tv in comparison to OLED.

OLED is fantastic however very good LCD's same size for 1/4 of the price. I hope OLED comes down a lot but don't know how long it will take before it's worth it over an LCD. They also have a lot of niggles too, they are far from perfect. Hope it's all sorted soon, I want one but don't know how long before they become reasonably priced compared to LCD for the increase in quality.

Yeah, the Panasonic DX902 for instance is a very good FALD set; but at the end of the day it's just another LCD and suffers from haloing around bright objects, etc. We have 2 4K OLEDs in the house; a 2015 LG 960v and a 2016 E6 (both 55"). The 2015 set has minor banding in near black, the 2016 set is damn near perfect. I'd take both over any LCD set. The 2015 models can be had for decent prices.

We still have a Pioneer Kuro from 2007 which sees use in the back room and I'd take it over most current LCDs even though it's not smart, it's not 3D, it's not 4K and puts out a shed load of heat.

OLED is the next TV's for us. But going to wait it out couple of years and stick with our H6400's for time been which im happy with. Just hope they can bring the screen sizes down a little. Wouldn't fancy a 55" in the Bedroom lol. 48" for our living is fine. Think we could just squeez a 55"

Remember the bezel size is very thin on OLED sets. My E6 OLED 55" is about the same size as a 50" Panasonic VT30.
