Hi all,

Looking at a custom build (my first) I currently have a Dell XPS desktop which is about 2-3 years old. Firstly, I am hoping to use the HDD, monitor, disk drive, RAM (will add more), OS, case and PSU.

The few parts I was thinking of replacing are as follows;

Intel i5 3570k

Asus P8Z77-v LX2 Intel Z77

Graphics wise I am open to suggestions I am looking for sub £100 and have been looking at the below 2. Anyone who has any other suggestions feel free to throw them about?

Geforce GTX 650

or

GT640

From my relatively basic understanding of computing I think these components will all go together. If someone more knowledgable can inform me otherwise then please do.

I realise that the PSU may be shocking (aha aha aha) the current PSU is 250 watts of useless goodness

I am budgeting £300-400, I do not intend to overclock so I was hoping the current PSU will be fine, if not no biggie I can spend a little there. In regards to the RAM I am getting 8 gig anyway so anything else that fits will be a bonus.

£80 for GPU
£170 on the Processor
£24 on the RAM
£68 on Mobo.

= £342

So £60 left on improvements and/or PSU upgrade.

Thanks,

Jack

That PSU will really struggle to power a discrete graphics card as well as the other parts. NVidia recommend a minimum 400W PSU for the GTX650, for example.

Also, assuming that you mean the OS that came installed on your Dell, then you won't be able to reuse it, as the license is tied to that PC and can't be transferred.

Cheers for the info guys.

Seems getting a decent PSU is definitely necessary! Think I'll just get a 500w for a little less than that 850 beast.

Where would be the best place to get a second hand card sourced from?
Do you think the i5 3570k is worth getting now is it on an offer at the mo (though its only £10-15 I think!

I got my i5 for £150 but it is still a good price though, what is this system going to be used for ?

i would try and put a little extra away and get a 7850

The XFX 550W would be a good choice for PSU

And I'm not sure if classified sections are counted as "competitors" but there's two places I had in mind :p
