Been looking at NAS boxes of late - Synology, NetGear, Asustor to name but a few.

Then I stumbled across a video suggested for me on Youtube about building your own NAS and it intrigued me, so thought I'd see if I could do it for the same price or even (optimistically) do it cheaper while getting a bit more oomph out of the parts.

So I did an AMD spec and an Intel spec.

CPU - AMD A4 6320 DC 3.8GHz (overkill?) OR Intel Pentium G3420
Motherboard - MSI A88XI AC mini-ITX OR Asus H87I-PLUS mini-ITX

then common components:

RAM - Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1333Mhz
Case - Lian Li Q25B
HDD - 4 x Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm 2TB
PSU - Corsair Builder 500w

and a pen drive for installing the OS. Worth noting that the AMD mobo has an AC wifi adaptor built in whereas the Intel one would rely on good old ethernet.

I just wondered what you guys thought? I've still got my PC, it needs an upgrade in the near future but for the mean time it does all I throw at it and all I need it to do but I'm getting the itch to start tinkering with something so would this be worth the bother? Off the top of my head, it sort of draws level in price with the NAS OCUK sell but the specs do seem better which can only be good for playing HD video... :)

Anyhoo, let me know what you think :)
