Hi all,

I am looking at building a custom rig (as its loads cheaper than the Dell systems). Please see the image below of the system I have put together and offer advice or suggestion please. I have used the 6870 graphics card to balance cost/performance, anyway here it is:

Seems like a competitor shopping cart!

2 6870's? Should go for a 6970/similar.
Don't really need a 1250W PSU, 1000W max I would say (still overkill).
Don't really need Win7 Ultimate, unless you are specfically needing/wanting the extra features.

Hi all,

My next quarter VAT bill is expected to be massive and so the VAT will be reclaimed increasing my budget.

I picked the 6870's for the same reason I didn't pick the extreme CPU (almost double the price for a little extra performance. The price against performance on the 6870's was best value (toms hardware benchmarks).

I was more concerned on the; RAM, SSD, Mobo and yes the graphics (but within reason?).

I hope you can all assist.

Thanks for the post - I am unware of 2 GPU info in your post pcAnywhere. I was on the understanding it would increase the graphics by 50-80 percent and thus being more powerful than one 6970? Confused? I will also price up from the overclockers site to see what I can get for my money.

Oh I will use this for games, hd files and general browsing.

6870 xfire may give you more performance than 1 6970 but their lack of vram(1gb vs 2gb of the 6970) will cause problems in games that need as much vram as possible, and before you say that 2x 6870 will be 2gb vram don't as you don't double/triple/quadruple(xfire/tri-fire/quad-fire) the vram as you add more cards.

psu go with antec, corsair or xfx. unless planning on tri/quad fire you DON'T need 1kw+, 750/850w is more than enough.

Thanks for your response.

I understand that buying 2 x 6970's will be better, of course, but at a cost of approx £200 - 250, is the difference really going to be that noticable?

I would have thought buying a large PSU would have given me room to expand at a later date?

I totally forgot the OC shop so I am now pricing parts up on there.

The scaling from multi gpus is very game dependent, which is why I'd suggest a single, powerful GPU that you know is going to give you good frame rates rather than simply guessing if your game of choice works in Xfire/SLI

spending £2k+ and skimping 'pennies' on the ram? go for a better c9 ram

with a ssd no need for the extra speed of the cavier black, save the £20 and go for the samsung f3 or even the 2tb f4 at £110

stick with the tried and tested silver arrow or change to a closed loop liquid cooler(will allow rams with fins to be used).

if you're going to be spending £400+ per graphics card wait for the 7970 next week as it beats a 3gb 580.

Mr Fowler C9 Ram won't make any difference whatsoever since i5 is not memory limited and the WD HDD has a 5 year guarantee.

As for GFX I am not convinced your new AMD item is a better value choice based on these i5 figures

Hi,

Thanks guys. I would like the new processor from Intel as I already have the 2600 i7 and 2630 (laptop processor) - I don't want to be moving backwards?

Also would 1 x 6990 be better than 2 x 6870 or 2 x 6970? I really don't want to overkill here, I would run the monitor at 1200.

Yes I own UA?

Cheers

With respect, unless you are personally making a sequel to Avatar or launching your own satellite there is diminishing returns gaming at regular resolutions beyond what has already been spec'd.

You will have bought a cupboard with no wall to hang it on :p;):):):D

I am just very impatient (loading times) and want the best - whats wrong with that?

Why have a car which drives upto 200 mph, when the UK max speed limit is 70 mph (except when overtaking for 10 seconds @ 80 MPH on the motorway)? Its not nessesarily being able to drive 200 mph but rather how quickly (reaching 70 mph), smoothly and enjoyable to you drive at 70 mph.

Kind of a pointless post really ipod.
