Custom build PVR

I've decided to ditch Virgin media and go freeview supplemented with Plex. I did actually really like the Tivo box but, it's not worth the money I was paying every month.

I've been reading about replacements and Youview or Freeview play seem the way to go, being as close to a Tivo experience as possible. Humax in particular being recommended.

However when I read reviews for them I do see a lot of negativity about performance from the Humax models. I'm assuming the components and particularly drives they put in them aren't really up to it after a few years.

Has anyone built their own custom freeview PVR or is it possible to mod Humax boxes to improve them?

There's custom firmware for the Humax T2 which makes it very versatile. But that's an old model and no longer on sale. Nothing for the new ones as far as I am aware.

The T2 is well worth picking up on Ebay and putting the custom F/W on. Easy to swap the internal drive out if you want more space or it dies.
