I've been looking at these synology NAS boxes. Look brilliant.

But I'm also thinking, why don't I just build one and use openmediavault.

Any recommendations on the kit to buy? Think cheap AMD stuff? But not really up on the low powered low cost kit.

Help appreciated.

I use a Microserver N54L, upgrade to 8gb ram.

Runs all my 24/7 functions like torrents, wamp (webserver), ventrilo server etc. Some of this is on virtual machines.

Very stable device.

I've seen 7 3.5" drives in it with some minor modification (sata card). Normally you'd fit 1 O/S drive and upto 4 3.5" storage drives. Plus space for a singl 5.25".

I run server 2012, but you may find a flavour of linux is more suited and cheaper/free.

I have an N54L running win 7 with 4 x 4TB HDD and a 60GB SSD. Great choice for a home server/media box/backup device.
