custom icon for removeable drives for autorun

create a new file on your removable drive/usbkey/cdrom called autorun.inf

in this file have this..

[autorun]
ICON=iconname.ico

save and close it

place iconname.ico in the same place (both have to be the root of the directory)


set them both to hidden (so its tidier :) ), now take out the media and put it back in and you'll have your icon showing for it

I've got a 'w800i' icon and autorun.inf on my phone that does that and the same on my USB key!...

Found out how to do this when I bought a Maxtor OneTouch!... as it had a crappy icon and the autorun.inf file... I changed to icon and then thought 2I wonder if I can do this with other drives!...

So now my C: (and its M; partition) and both partitions on my OneTouch have a nice Vista style drive icon!.. :)

Just wish there was an easy way to change the default on the CD/DVD drives!..

there is... :)

open regedit, goto

HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\driveicons\
(no spaces)

now you'll need to create a KEY for each drive letter.

and within that key, create 2 more keys called

DefaultIcon
DefaultLabel

you can then change the "default value" of each key in turn - icon must be full path to the icon, label is just text. like this.....

 
OKAY i have tried and tried for the last half hour to do this and cannot

I have downloaded some icons and have the one I want to use it is called USB

This is how i did it and it dont work for me:-

I have created a New Folder on my USB stick (512mb)
called it autorun.inf
inside that folder I have the USB icon itself and a notepad document called
USB.ico
inside that notepad file i have
[autorun]
icon=usb.ico


have i dont something wrong ?

also when i stick my USB drive into my computers USB socket i never get a pop up window so i can choose things, always have to go into My Computer

I didnt fully understand about saving the notepad as a autorun.inf

it is now done, thank you.

Could only find one pretty USB icon though, had to use that.

yeah,make a notepad file

a notepad text file is the 1byte per letter -ie really clean with no formatting


just make sure its .inf and not .inf.txt after you've made it :)

Yeah noticed this on my Maxtor OneTouch drive. Quite nice and handy for when you have a card reader that creates 4 extra drive letters and doesn't read the memory card name so you have to guess which drive is the right one.
 
on my card reader, i disable the drives i never use in device manager, but now able to mod the icons thanks to marc, thanks :)
