Custom made cables

Hey guys, not sure if posted in right place but here goes.

I've recently started making my own custom cables and successfully made the 24-pin and it works. I'm having lots of trouble with the 8-pin PCI-e cables though. I've followed the pinout I managed to download and also created the split wires which I found a guide on from singularity computers (sorry if not allowed to mention other companies), but when connected, the PSU just makes a clicking sound and stays off.

Not sure what I'm doing wrong but need some advice. Is there a way to test the volts of these cables using a multimeter as I dont think the psu tester I have can test them.

Personally I would not be doing this. Is it not possible to source the cables you need?
Why shouldn't I be doing this? I'm not stupid enough to test my main system with dodgy cables. I have an old setup I use for testing.

I could source the cables easily but I am wanting custom made so I can improve cable management for starters. Yh I could also get them custom made for me but it would be cheaper me doing it myself.
 
Why not make your own? always some Doom/Nay Sayer!.

Plug into psu but not into anything other end then use a multi meter to check +/- is right to match pin out of psu. Photo/write it down as do so have a record.
Looking at mine the top line is + bottom line are - which will be the same for all as that's how GPU's are set up.
If don't have output pins diagram do a mulimeter test and write down again/draw diagram so tally up with ends

Mind remember are both PSU's same pin out layout? Many corsair follow Seasonic pin out as Cable mods list for both. But there also made by CWT for corsair.

More fun when made your self instead of being a Sheep following the marketing hype!

Many say you shouldn't do this/that etc is because they don't have a clue themselves!

For what it's worth, I am not a sheep, merely someone who has seen the past results of DIY cables on PSUs. These weren't good results.

But crack on if you like, it's your kit, be interested to see if you can sort it.

See one thing I'm confused about is the pinout I have doesnt seem to match the readings I'm getting unless they are correct. I have a corsair ax1200i and the pinout suggests that top 4 pins are ground and bottom 4 are 12v. Another pinout shows that the split cable (single end) should be plugged into pin 4 on the psu side. Pin 4 being on the bottom suggests there should be 12v coming from the split cable but the readout was 0. When tested with the single end in pin 8 on top row (ground) I was getting a 12.09v reading.

Either way, the psu wouldn't power on when connected to the gfx card so I'm stumped lol

Another thing that is really baffling me is that I have the original pcie cable that came with the psu and I tested the voltages on it. The 2 pin showed as 12.09v and bottom 3 of the 6 showed as 12.09v. I have my 2 pin connected in the same place as the original (pin 8) and when tested, was also showing the exact same readings as the original cable, yet when turning the system on with the cables connected, all it did was click and didn't power up. I am so confused right now.

Quick update:

I had all 3 cables attached to the psu (my 6+2 pin and 8 pin plus psu original cable). I tested the psu original again using pin 5 as ground which showed pins 1, 2 & 3 as 12.09v but pins 8 + 4 were 0. When I did the same test on my cables, it showed both 8 and 4 pins as 12.09v. The original cable has the split wire connected to pin 4, as is the same with mine. On that basis, why are my 8 + 4 pins showing a 12v rating but the original cable doesnt? Pic attached to show what I mean.

Why not just bell out the orginal cable and then copy it pin for pin one at a time? I've done a few sets, and if I ever have issues this always seems to slove it. Make sure you test each cable with the orginals and swap yours in one at a time to help.
