Hey guys. This is really just a query more than anything else. A family member is looking at building a media server but I personally don't really see the point considering the vast offers there are with pre-built media servers already out there and of course the options to set up your own personal networks over your router network at home to stream and copy files and videos.

However, out of interest and curiousity above anything else, is there really any point in building your own media server? And what kinds of things are to be looked at when venturing into building one??

TBH I wouldnt bother building one, if its for storing, streaming and even watching media from, I would like at a HP Microserver deal, either the newer one with the slightly quicker processor or the 1st gen, both epically good and CPU is very good on both! I have a first gen and it munches anything I throw at it with ease. People have been running VM's off them, using them as full blown HTPC's with an added low profile graphics card. All for a very low cost including cashback. Check out the HP Microserver thread.

Either that or spend more money building a custom one.

Thanks for the insight DJMK4, something I was hoping someone would say lol :D

The Microserver offers are awesome but there were two reasons I built my own server; 1) I wanted more than 4 HDDs for storage 2) I like building PCs and I wanted to. Basically for most peoples needs it wouldnt be worth while doing it yourself.
