Hey all,

Right I have a crazy idea for when I reformat my iMac, and maybe someone has an knowledge to back this crazy idea up, or hopefully someone might have tried it themselves..

I have the original OS X CD that came with my iMac (10.4.2 :() which is pretty scratched.. Just wondering if there's a way to extract the individual packages and create a new master OS X CD from this.

I would do a direct copy but as it stands the CD is dual layer format so the total size of the install disc is 6.74GB, so that's out the window.

I tried doing something simular when trying to copy my iLife 06 DVD (also scratched) on to a backup DVD but the packages would not install because it detected that I hadn't run the master package installer.

Hope someone can help.. would be nice to create a boot CD with the elements of iLife I actually use on, as well as the OS :)

Thanks,

You could try and ring Apple and see if they would send you some replacement discs?
I did but they were scratched also, although not as bad

...was asking this so I could make a legit backup before it bites the dust

I think its possible to install OS X from an external firewire drive by copying the CD across. I can't seem to find the instructions though. Try googling.

go on ebay and buy a cheap copy of tiger?
I have a new copy of Tiger but it hasn't got front row so it's kind of pointless putting it on my iMac :(

Thanks for the other tip though.. may be handy, although not quite was I envisaged
