They use a combination of real life applications which to be brutely honest is a lot more realistic than a benchmark (which can be programmed for-take some of NVidia's driver releases as an example).
If you test just using 3D Mark then you are testing your machine on one synthetic program, this is less accurate as an overall picture for hardware.
aye thats one very good point about CPC. with their different resolution and game tests you can see and compare how you'd be able to play that game or how much better/worse that new gfx card is.
