Custom res forcer, which program? (ati)

Try powerstrip but there is no gaurentee of success especially over DVI. I got so fed up of it not working on a 1800XL that I switched to a 8600GTS. The nVidia drivers (old control pannel) make it very easy to set up 1360*768 @ 50.
 
HDMI is essentially DVI +Audio. With ATI cards you either have to live with a scaled 720p output, or use Powerstrip.
