Hi all,

Had an absolute nightmare trying to get a custom rom working on my One S... couldn't even flash my backup for some reason either...

So far I've managed to get zenrom on there so I can at least use the phone, but I want to try a 'proper' custom rom.

I think the problems I've experienced are due to flashing the boot.img; what exactly is this and is there one I should be using in particular for roms like CM10? I've been searching high and low and can't find any information on what should be used.

Help greatly appreciated,

Cheers.

Let me guess, your phone is unlocked but not S-OFF?

That's the cause of the boot.img problem, HTC suck basically. Their bootloader unlock is half arsed, you have to fastboot the boot.img after you flash the ROM in recovery. ROMs will come with their own boot image to use.

Ps. Get S-OFF and live will be much easier.

yeah i'm s-on atm and didn't really fancy doing it as it looks intimidating :p

when i tried the viper one s rom, i did the fastboot flash boot.img thing after installing the rom, rebooted and was met by a black screen which stayed their for a good 20 mins before i reset the phone...

where will the boot.img file be for custom roms then? is it held in the zip with all the other files, and if so, do i need to extract that and flash it manually using cmd prompt?

many thanks for your input btw :)

e: currently looking at trickdroid 10.3.1; is this for ville(s4) or villec2(s3)? on the trickdroid site it has nothing about ville

Yeah the boot.img is just in the ROM .zip file, so you'll need to haul it out and flash it via the CMD prompt.

As for which version the ROM is for, I have no idea. The build.prop will probably tell you, so have a nose through it before you do anything.

absolute diamond, thanks man.

got the boot.img file now and it appears from the build.prop file that it's for ville :D

i owe you a beer!

got trickdroid working (almost) perfectly; wifi won't work... time to trawl xda!

once again, many thanks man, you saved my bacon :p

i had the same problem on my one xl

i am still s on and growing a set of balls to try and follow to get s off

i use the one xl all in one toolkit and just flash the boot.img using the flash a kernel option

there are still some roms i cant use because i accepted the over the air update and this also upgraded my touchscreen panel so cm10 doesnt work unless i downgrade

htc certainly dont make it easy lol

most of the one xl stuff applies to the one s

weirdly i didn't flash the boot.img but TD10.3.1 worked fine anyway (aside from the wifi not working at all).

now i've tried to install bulletproof kernel with the wifi fix to try and sort that, now the phone bootloops :/

how absolutely ****ing bizarre - just reflashed trickdroid and now the wifi works

won't bother with the kernel now since it just seems to give me a headache :p

Boot.img contains the kernel ;)

The thing about kernel swapping with S-ON is that there is more to it than just to boot.img, you also need the wifi module that matches the kernel, hence your wifi problem after swapping.

i had the wifi problem before swapping kernels... after it just bootlooped.

flashed back to just the rom, without fastbooting the boot.img and it's working absolutely perfectly, wifi as well!

and emu i did try flashing the boot.img from the kernel folder instead of the one from the rom, same bootloop cycle - i have no idea why it's worked the way i did it but it did :p
