Custom Snapbacks?

Many years ago, I used to DJ at a local rock/metal club. Two hours on a Friday night and the same on a Saturday night. It wasn't that difficult.

Put on record, play, at end chat or fade into another. Easy peasy! The hard part was judging the mood and what to play next. You could have a drink, pick up women, even dance. It was great! :D

Now all they do is interfere with the "music"! :p

Wrong raves.

At the ones I go to, everyone is too loved up to do that, all they want is music :)

Stuff like Chase and Status just attracts ****s. Something like Hazard, Original Sin, and most club nights from lesser known imprints (Playaz, Digital Soundboy, Dub Police) are really great :)
That's why i said they are ruining the scene (im not talking about the d'n'b scene)

I go to mostly deep house/tech house/techno nights. On the whole the crowds are ok but some events, and some dj's start attracting snapback idiots now. Prime example: CircoLoco events (particularly in the UK, the ones in Ibiza aren't AS bad yet)

Haha :D

Seeing a good DJ mix is half the attraction for me. It's why I love Andy C and Hazard, their mixing skills are incredible! Playing great music is just a bonus :)

I went to see Sven Vath (sp?) last year at fabric. Was an absolutely incredible night, and sadly the only one of it's kind that I've been to. I need to go to more!

I also saw him last year in fabric, was probably the same night! ( think it was last year anyway, a lot of my nights in fabric are kind of blurred together) :D

Either April or May last year. And yeah I know that feeling :D

Edit: Talking about Deep House, Gemini's new EP is stunning. Second Law is really nice :)

This thread is a winner for passive-aggressive smilies!

Oh, and "Moombahcore"? How utterly ridiculous.

"Moombahcore is a style of moombahton with influences from dubstep and electro house outside of dutch house. Characteristics of the genre include chopped vocals, dubstep-influenced bass sounds, and extensive build-ups.
While there is still much debate over who was the first to produce in the moombahcore style, artists such as Munchi, Dillon Francis, Knife Party, Nick Thayer and Skrillex helped this new sub-genre to gain underground popularity. Other producers associated with moombahcore include Singularity, F3ral, Calvertron, Diplo, FuntCase, Noisestorm, Figure, 501 and Brown & Gammon. "

So you're pretty much an iTunes DJ, if a DJ at all. Really annoys me when people regard themselves as a DJ when all they do is play a tune, fade out, fade in etc. No DJing there at all. All you're doing is playing music, anyone can do that. Electronic music has formal structure, unlike anything guitar based, therefore tunes actually fit together.

Try watching someone like Friction, Andy C or Youngsta; they play for anywhere between 1 and 6 hours on 3 or 4 1210's. That is proper DJing.

Beatmatching is the absolute basic element of mixing music and anyone who claims to be a DJ should know how to do this. Alongside this you need to know how to read music, in terms of counting beats and phasing. Then comes pitch riding, crossfading, EQing, double dropping, triple dropping, cutting, beatswapping, scratching and hundreds of other styles.

All of this comes before learning how to read the crowd, harmonic mixing and actually knowing what tune to play next. You can't just play any old tune as it won't sound right.

As said by Fabio:

"Anyone can dj...But very few know how to play the right tune at the right time..You can't teach someone how to do that"
