"It is time to break the power of the old industrial clock, take back our lives and work for a sustainable future."

I don't know about anyone else but I'm all for this idea, we work too damned much, too obsessed with acquiring pointless possessions, been saying this for years!

Bring it on, I say. :)

Surely more employment opportunities would be available, as people working less hourse would mean more people to get the job done?

Dont be silly.

You really think that its a good idea? I couldn't take nearly a half reduction in pay. And I only get the pay becasue I work shifts.

If everyone did 50% less work, it would reduce consumer demand by much the same since everyone would have less money. The cost of things might come down slightly, but ultimately the cost of something reflects the effort put into making it, which hasn't changed.

Surely the option is already there?
If people want to do less work, earn less money and have more free time then they can just take on a part time job.

Another stupid Left wing idea to mess the country up, Haven't they done enough damage in Previous decades.
The Majority of people don't earn enough to live properly without going without so why would they want a 50% pay cut.
Can we not just use this as an excuse to go Sick on Lefties !!!

hmm no the cost of most stuff is its manufacturing cost etc + 50% mark-up

The idea is easily achievable, but already in 8 replies you see how entrenched people are in their way of thinking about money and possessions.

Would need a major re education of people for this to work, maybe in a few generations time.

don't worry they can support you on benefits ala working tax credits and you can be controlled by the left-wing fascists.

trying telling my bank when my mortgage is due or when my kids are crying because there is no food on the table.

Get real !

It cannot work.

No the cost of manufacture is the measure of the effort put into making the product, form the effort to getting the metal out of the ground, the effort to transport the materials to the factory, the effort to assemble it etc. The cost in $ is merely the quantification of this into monetary terms and is largely tied to what everyone involved in making that product got paid for their effort.

Obviously profit is on top of this but for most items this is typically in the 5% range outside the realms of luxury items or otherwise limited supply.

If you are going to have a Dig at least be current, I have worked for the last 13 months.

Give me half her wage and I could live on 21 hr week, let her live on a sink estate working minimum wage 45 hr week for a month and ask her could she survive on 21 hrs.

This so called experts know bugger all about the average joes life.

why Don't you get a job and live in real world have some kids then come back and tell me about life, hey ?

yeah bar the kids i am, You need to chill out maybe its a hyperthetical argument for an ideal world. Im only playing devils advocate but all you dicks wanna do is turn it into a Anti labour argument.

You know what, i give up. Have fun struggling mate.

yes yes you will be first on the re education list.
Ok re-educate us dim-wits on how we can maintain the same living standards, but for half the effort.

Heh, sounds like spam emails I sometimes get.

Though I will admit house prices will crash catastrophically.

Half my pay, I could cope with that but only because my accomodation and food come straight out my pay. Don't know how you would with mortages etc etc.

Not a good idea imo.

its a great idea, with the minimum wage at £5.80 an hour, who wouldn't want to live on £121.80 a week. These people have no idea. I'm a student and spend more than that a week to support myself and that's just food and rent. Oh wait i forgot tax and national insurance lol
