Quick one guys (Im no car guru/mechanic!) I just wanna know if im being fobbed off or if this is really a problem

Garage is getting new tyres fitted on my car, and he mentioned that the CV gaiter is leaking - now I know from past experience that garages always 'find other problems whilst fixing one!' :o

So, is this a serious prob, or not? I swear there just out to get more money off me, it went in for two tyres and now hes on about this which could cost another £80 PLUS he said to get the tracking done on the new tyres????..another £20

Help, am I being gutted left, right and centre? I have no real idea there seriousness of these probs, and id look abit of a tit if it exploded 2 days later..

I thank you.

It is semi serious, as in if left it will become a danger, the bearings will run dry and could eventually sieze or it could shear off leaving you with no drive.

The boot which holds grease around the bearings on the driveshaft has a small split in, and all that grease is coming out whenever you drive the car.

Depending on what end of the driveshaft the CV which is broken is at, the grease will be on the inside of the wheel or around the gearbox.

£80 doesnt sound too bad, maybe a little high including parts to do it, it depends on which end its at and the car really as the majority of the cost will be labour, say 2 hours at £35 an hour and £10 for parts.

The tracking is usually done so that the tyre wear evenly and the car handles correctly, otherwise you can suffer from excessive tyre wear and replace them twice as quick (which you dont want) ;)

Thanks Berger.

Its got its MOT in August, so I guess im gonna have to get it done regardless then. Jeeez, guess they got me by the short and curlies.

I actually think he's done you a favor by pointing a potentially dangerous fault.

You get a dangerous fault fixed, he gets some business - everyone's a winner.

I got an entirely new CV joint for £15. If he seals the gaiter up again, make sure he doesn't use the "glue it down the middle" method, as it will just split again in no time.

stating what a cv joint cost you without knowing make or model is pretty irrelevant.

I know he owns a Peugeot 306, genius. And guess what.....they're pretty much the same price.

But thank you for the lesson in irrelevance...

I did the cv boot on my uncle Fiester before my last mot, i was surprised how simple it was to do. But i generaly work on the car myself anyway.

Parts for uncle Fiester are cheap too
