Anyone done, or doing a cyberdeck build?

Although more of a project than case central post, figured it fit here a little better and maybe eleven rekindle some of the case modders of old!

I've always wondered what the point would be things dubbed a 'cyberdeck' however I'm close to starting a build on one.

I mess around with pi's and various boards on the couch a lot using a lap tray and little screen, then end up swapping between that and an SSH session on a laptop.

I can never be bothered cleaning it up if still "in progress" so was thinking an all in one cyberdeck build that could be closed up, could be my solution.

Thoughts so far...

* Hardcase to house a screen, pi and keyboard, plus tray space to hold any boards/bits used for what I'm working on.
* Screen to be recycled from an old laptop/MacBook
* Switch for internal pi or hdmi input allowing me to flip between both devices
* 67-70% keyboard for shell use
* Embedded usb ports, storage/SD card inputs

Started sourcing a few bits which is the easy part, where it goes from here, little idea yet!

I'm starting off with a cheap 300mm x 360mm x 105mm hard case which has arrived now, better quality than I was expected and massively overkill

I've had to get the TFT panel I wanted to use out of the old the laptop tonight so I can source a controller for it. Turns out to be a HB140WX1-601 which is great as the controller is already on its way for about £15.

Got hold of a cheap mechanical keyboard as well which sits nicely on the inside of the case size wise, so next step is waiting for the controller to arrive, then figuring out power and cabling etc.

I've always liked the idea of cyber decks but there's no escaping the fact that the real cyber deck is your phone, tiny and portable can run VR headsets, fly drones, use the internet play games control the lights etc everything the decks could do except plug into your brain lol

Beyond true @Tefal, was only talking about this with someone in work the other day. I genuinely feel like the last 20 years from a tech perspective has been Star Trek and other sci-fi tech becoming reality, the latest being 3D printers (replicators :p)

Fundamentally for me, especially in this case, it's a mini shell interface in a hard case, more for storing bits than being truly portable or strictly a deck as it were. It's a 'pop-up workstation area in a box

an elongated box like a Keyitar with pop up screen for the proper retro deck look :p

I do have a soft spot for these builds though so looking forward tonsee how you get on, will it have a giger counter? :p

Oh this might interest you

This is one of the test units I use a lot iirc it's old XP enterprise on them, closest thing to real world cyber deck, the hotswap fual battery system might be an awesome thing you can steal, as rhe batteries and chargers are sold commercially, solution is a hole cut in the peilican case and a little live hing plastic flap over it and 2 batteries so you can add a new one without turning off.

I've seen these things take a 10ft tumble and still work for fine for years after so the pelican case pc system defiantly can work for rugged

Oh the little round lemo connectors one is usb they're pricey but if you want snazzy aviation style rugged conectors for peripherals they're nice.

Like with my clothing I'm at the point I do practicality over style  Hoping the controller arrives soon as I'll be stalled for ages otherwise.

Hopefully!

Lemo connectors are practical is you're practicality is "several hundred shaved. Apes will use this for 12 years till the keyway rubs away"

Motorcycle usb ports might be a good look out. Waterproof rugged caps and cheap
