I've noticed that the audio from blu-ray playback is generally very quiet but the volume can suddenly increase during playback of explosions etc. I have to constantly adjust the volume when I watch films which is very annoying.

I have a hifi-set up and the audio is routed via HDMI to my monitor and then to my hi-fi with an interconnect. I checked my speaker settings and they are at 2.0 which is consistent with my setup.

Does anyone know why the playback is so quiet?

also, watching any 5.1 source with 2.0 is going to make parts with talking absolutely crap, at least get yourself a centre speaker!

If the blu ray has a dolby stereo / or surround track listen to that instead and the player wont be trying to downmix 5.1 to stereo

is it downmixing properly? otherwise youll be getting practically no dialogue audio and all the background/action sounds.

I found the settings I think. One setting was in powerDVD and the other was under my sound card settings. Everything sounds so much better now!
