Cyclic noise from rear wheel

In the last couple of days I noticed a noise that gets faster or slower depending how fast I'm driving. It's hard to describe the noise, but something like two empty baked bean cans scraping each other. I've been putting very heavy weights in the car recently such as boxes of large heavy porcelain tiles, and countless trips to the rubbish tip with stacks of bags of heavy rubble and wood from house clearance whilst my place has had builders in. It's a peugeot 307. When loading the car with these things, the rear of the car was weighed down and I could see it lowered quite a bit almost going over the rear wheels. The noise sounds like it's coming from the rear offside wheel. Could it be bearings or CV joint?

Not sure if it can be described as a rumble or even a knocking tbh. It starts at very low speeds below 30mph and increases it's speed as the car gets faster. I've only driven the car up to about 30mph since hearing this. If it's a rear wheel bearing, is it reasonably easy/inexpensive to fix? I'm going to get it to a garage tomorrow and up on a ramp for inspection. I just hope I haven't broken something like an axle that's going to be really expensive.

Doubtful on the rear of a 307, unless you face backwards and drive everywhere in reverse.

Heh, well that's good to know. Is there anything else that might be damaged other than bearings? I suppose a metallic grinding noise might be a better way to describe it. Perhaps there's something grazing against the wheel?

You may have knocked an arch liner, heat shield or it could even be a stone caught behind the disc and backing plate or even a stone in the tyre tread, however the noise as described would make me think wheel bearing.

Assuming it might be a bearing, is it relatively easy and cheap for a garage to fix?

Yea, around the £100 mark normally.

Not too bad then. I took out AA parts and repair as part of my cover in october.
They cover up to £500 and I just pay a £32 or £35 excess. Do you think I can claim for something like bearings repair or anything else it might be?

You'll have to read up on your warranty. Some might class it as a consumable item.

Mine cost £150 to replace, and that was for a 4wd car, so all the control arms and the driveshaft had to come off. For a FWD car it's much more straight forward.

Tracking would only need to be done if any control arms have to be messed around with. Sometimes it's as easy as wheel of, disc+brake off( or drum), hub off and then old bearing out!

Bearings don't normally make a cyclic scraping noise when they fail. Check the tyres for bulges esp. on the inside and any sign of the tyre touching the arch liner etc.

Also check the stone guard on the rear discs are straight and not touching the disc.

Would be nice if it turns out to be something simple like those things. I've booked an appointment for 2.45pm today for a local garage to get it up on a ramp.

I'm typing from my phone while in the car, in slow moving north circular traffic. Traffic on the north circ, now there's a surprise. I'm on my way to another place, national tyres in Ealing. Started journey with the noise again which was quite loud, but not doing it at all now! It's either gone completely or intermittent. Maybe some stone was lodged and has freed itself. I'm nearly there so will still put it on the ramp. Will report back later.

Meh, an hours wait as they only have one ramp and cars waiting before me, I cba to hang around. That was a waste of time. Gonna drive home and go to my local garage booked for 2.45pm.
