Cyclists, tell me about helicopter tape.

I've ordered some 3M helicopter tape to use on parts of my Motorbike that will be prone to rubbing, such as the area around pillion pegs and footpegs etc etc.

Just how durable is it and I am I just going to be wasting my time using it?

I know its very popular on expensive push bikes.

It's quite durable. I'm not sure that answers your question though.

I use it to prevent cable rubbing and stone chips. It wouldn't really protect crank arms from regular rubbing, or at least not without reapplying more often than I would like.

Its mainly going to be used where mine and the wifes boots are going to occasionaly rub against the frame and pillion pegs.

The pillion pegs are welded on to the sub frame on a Tiger 800 so i cant just swap them out if she rubs the paint off with her boots, so I wanted to try and add some protection down there.
It wont be constant rubbing, but just enough that after a few trips she will off started to wear the paint away.
I've got no problem with reapplying a fresh set of tape every trip or so.

Sounds more like the cable rub type scenario then. One application of tape in that situation would last 10,000 miles for me.
