So we get tropical cyclones over the SE pacific every year, and i've never really thought anything more of them, infact, i only recently learned that it's basically a hurricane with a different name, I always in my mind downgraded a cyclone from a hurricane! There was a bad one in Vanuatu a few years ago (2015 i think?). But other than that, they're pretty mild in comparison. Anyway, reason for this post is that we have what is apparently, potentially the worst cyclone this century heading right for us right now, it's set to hit NZ land some time tonight or tomorrow AM, this is the 4th storm we've had in as many weeks, infact, our summer started in December, so far we've had literally 5 days of settled sunshine between xmas and new year. this summer has been atrocious so far, much worse than the average UK summer (which i came here to get away from :D ). We had major flooding in Auckland last week! I never suffered personally with the floods thugh, pretty impossible, living at the edge of a cliff haha! However, wind is a different matter, we're totally exposed to the wind from the north / north east, and this cyclone is heading from that direction with the wind hitting the house dead on, I can already feel the house shaking and it's only ~60km/h winds so far!

Anyway, I've tied down all our garden furniture, charged up all my devices and back up batteries, portable power unit it, got emergency food and cooking facilities ready if needed. Hopefully we'll all be good but we can't be too prepared. At the moment, it all feels surreal to me, i mean, i've been sensible about my approach to it 'just in case', but i'm also guilty of belittling the danger. Anyway, you can watch my demise from here if you want! We're expecting a direct hit tomorrow or Tuesday.

Hurricane isn’t dry…Hurricane Katrina caused a lot of flood damage.

I think they are the same thing, along with a typhoons, just different part of the world call them differently. (Someone correct me if I am wrong)

This is correct, the name is different due to geographical location. All hurricanes though.

You stay safe up there wez130, we are just starting to get it now in HB. This summer has been testing weather wise. We still have slips and a couple of one lane sections in our road from the last weather event a couple of weeks ago.
You too pal :)

We've just received a government official emergency alert.

Wind is definitely picking up now, i've just been to the gym and we were asked to leave at 2pm as the leisure centre is being prepared for use as an emergency refuge centre, i've already seen branches down on roads, waves are already crazier than i've seen here in NZ, at least, on the east coast! The supermarkets here yesterday were crazy busy, it was like lockdown all over again, though they are eerily quiet today, however, shelves have been emptied!

Well, so far, we've only had some wind and rain but it hasn't felt strong so far! I think, maybe because it's coming from the south east, I have houses behind me which are sheltering me. the worst is supposed to hit this afternoon though at around 4pm I believe. The sea, however, is rough as! I never usually see waves from my house, but they are there, you can see the swells coming in! Half of the peninsula that I live on (right at the end might I add too!) have had power cuts over night, touch wood, we've not had one yet. The eye of the storm looks like it's tracking further east than we were expecting too. I guess we'll see what happens later but so far it's feeling like a non-event, at least for me! I've not checked the news out yet to see how the rest of Northland / Auckland are coping.

Its ******* down hard here in Hawkes Bay!
Just seen the news, you're getting it pretty bad there! Tologa bay is blocked off due to flooding, SH2 is closed with flooding from Napier! Stay safe pal!
So all day, it's been pretty calm, a bit of wind and rain, most noticeable is the waves directly outside my house, in three years, i've never seen waves, it's a really calm bay normally! But people have literally been surfing out there today! In the last hour or so, the weather has gotten increasingly bad, heavy rain and winds picking up now! The eye of the storm is tracking down a bit further east than was originally predicted, it's currently over Great Barrier Island, which is probably about 50km north, and about 50km east from here, and it's going to get closer to land just in time for high tide at around 1am!
I haven't left the house today so i've not seen the effects so far, but watching the news, there are lots of slips, debris all over the place, i've seen evidence of some damage, but loads yet. Orewa beach is getting closer to land, deteriorating the beach edge with every wave, trees have literally been devoid of the ground they're rooted in! I'd say we're in for a pretty rough night ahead now! Stay safe my felow New Zealanders! See you on the other side :)
