cygwin and kali

Hey, hey,

We have been told (course) to download cygwin and kali and "have a play around as it will help you when we go indepth later"

Ok, cygwin all installed, kali i have running in vmware and also created a boot usb.

But what on earth are they and what can i do with them?!

Also, i installed a graphin GUI for kali, but all i see for cygwin is command line

Cygwin gives you a unix-like environment on Windows. It's very handy if you want to write shell scripts for running on unix-based servers on a Windows PC.

I haven't come accross Kali, but from Googling it it appears to be a linux distro based on Debian, but with lots of computer security testing tools in the standard install. Some tools (e.g. Wireshark) you can also get on Windows.

Kali is a re-branded Backtrack, which is a Penetration Testing and security platform distro.
