Cyprus

It use to be lovely. But now its gone down the pan abit. Prices are rising, from tourism, and building structures galore. not quite sure on ayia napa though :)

The building really is only the touristy areas. Once you get out of the towns and into the (non ex-pat) villages you stop seeing new villas etc. going up everywhere, and more of the unspoilt areas. We lived in Paphos, on the other side of the Island, so managed to avoid lots of the touristy places.

Some of the locals seemed to have no qualms about fly tipping etc, which can make some places look a little unsightly though.

Paphos has gone down the pan too, im afraid!

It what sense? they've just redone the entire marina. We own property there and think it is still as nice as it was when we started buying.

In the sense my grandparents used to live there for well over 15 years. and i visited at least 3 times a year even more, and buy the time they sold up it had gone down the pan, building contractors everywhere, prices on the up and up, sea views destroyed from construction yards. its turning into a concrete jungle.

we regularly go out with a couple who are from nicosia and we hope to visit with them soon (perhaps this summer)

I'd like to have basic greek before I travel though just to be polite.

Cypriots get a thumbs up from me if our friends and their friends are anything to go by.

bit of an usual country also, due to the fact the Cyprus pound is valued higher than the english pound. Not that many tourist type island in Europe who in essence have a better economy that the UK

We used the cypriot pound last august, think it must have been near the start or the change to the euro though.

I still remember how gorgeous the beaches were, only reason we went was the have a nice cool drink and swim in the sea which was just fantastic! Shame about the airport though, I don't like flying and the take off / landing was awful lol

Been several times and got married on nissi beach almost 2 years ago (anniversary this month). Ayia Napa doesnt not pretend to be anything other than a sleepy fishing village turned holiday hotspot, mainly for those wanting an alcohool fuelled holiday, however, families, travellers and older folk alike can all have excellent holidays basing themselves there. The troodos mountains, paphos, larnace and the relatively untouched little villages are all within what I would call feasible, the mountains being the furthest iirc, certain times of the year skiing is available which is crazy for an island which usually cooks in the med sun.
I first went as a single man years ago though now visit as a married family man with my two children and it still offers me/my family plenty if not more than the original reason for going.
I love the roughness of the island, I dont mean that in a bad way, You are allowed to get up onto bar tables and dance, conga out onto the streets while half juiced and breakfast in the mornings is usually in the company of the local wildlife, birds etc.
Health and safety hasnt bowed to the ridiculous mob unlike the uk.
