Just installed a D-Link dir-655 and have pour range.
My router is on my stairs banister.
It links wirelessly to my lounge htpc about 3m away, full signal.
but my pc in my kitchen, about 10m away, through a door, across the kitchen and round the corner, only gets 1 bar. My neighbours wireless network, 20m away and in the detached house next door is just as strong!!
What's the crack guys?!!
I have tried the 3 ariels in all different orientations but nothing improves it.

Cheers for any ideals.

Oh, it's set to channel 1, 20/40mhz, wireless n only. 2.4ghz

Ok as someone who has the same router and had it for years. The range of it is fantastic but positioning it is the key. For example mine in the attic in the center covers the whole house with 4 bars upstairs and 3 bars downstairs no matter what thats going through 2 floors. I moved it to the bedroom thinking hey its even closer to downstairs and it gets 2 bars. Reason its obviously bouncing off walls etc and maybe getting interference with other things.

Can you get access to your attic? if you can and it has a plug lay it flat and place the antennas like this \|/ a bit more spread out and check the signal. I found channel 11 on mine to work best. Use inssider to check who is on each wireless channel in your area.

20/40 is fine as its wireless N try turning off extra neighbourhood protection.

Right, cannot get it in the loft without lots of re-wiring.
Have downloaded inssider and seen neighbours on channel 6, covering channels 4-8 (20Mhz).
I have changed to channel 1 20Mhz, so covering -2-3, in theory.
Still only getting 1 bar! And he is on -81db and i am on -79db!
Have moved ariels to \|/ but no better, tried moving it from its side to flat, the rotated 90deg and never any better than 1 bar.
Next I guess is to unwire it, try it on loft somehow and on ground floor. If 1 is better I will worry how to get modem ethernet to router another way. Powerline maybe?!

Even if you can place just the router and power in the attic to test the signal its worth trying make sure its central in house.
Seems a strange one bud. What adapter is the pc in the kitchen using or is it built in?
If you place the router in the kitchen what is the signal like on the htpc will be interesting to see if it only picks up 1 bar.

Other than that did you turn off extra wireless protection? make sure that and short GI are unchecked. if your still struggling I would recommend home plugs or a wireless repeater. I bought the TP link repeater off ocuk and it works a charm delivering wireless to next door.

First off thanks for your comments and help Dave.
Turned the extra wireless protection off, but not the short gi, will do that next.
I will try it in loft, hall and kitchen and see if signal gets better.
Time to get the 20m extension lead out!!!

Awesome bud let me know once you have tried all that. I was using dwa and swapped to the tp link increased signal dramatically. But in your case once all tested a home plug or wireless repeater would be best option.

hmm if that works would be a good idea. I recommend the 200mb tp link homeplugs great value I use them.

Tried router by front door, no signal change.
Move to lounge which is central as possible and get 3/4 bar and connection indicated as 139mb up from 36mb!
Homeplugs ordered!!
