Is 10mbs LAN fast enough for SD AVI playback? Say 700MB for 45 episode- I don't want to buy a NAS only to find that streaming video over my LAN causes stuttering due to the speed. I have 100mps LAN cards and routers, but for some reason it just doesn't work at 100mps.

Also does the D-Link DNS-323 have power saving/hard disc shut-down after x hours? I don't need the drives to be on during the night, only when it's accessed.
 
got one a few weeks ago.yes it has power saving for the hdds.cant say about streaming as i got a gigabit switch and card at the same time and i only use it for storage with 2 500 giggers
 
Could you set your computer network card to 10mps and try playing a avi over the lan? thanks

Is the fan on 24/7? How loud is it? Does the unit cool hard drives to a suitable level? Does the NAS provide any sound proofing?
 
noise wise it is more of a humm than a fan noise.hdd temps have topped out at 46oC after many hours of transfer(contains 2 wd 500 gigers that were on deal of the week a while back)
fan i think is temp controlled,goes faster after a while(i reckon anyway)no sound proofing just a solid aluminium(maybe)box
mine is in a cupboard about 3 feet from my pc and chair
just set it to 10m for you no slow down was visible with either anime or live action(standard quality)
 
What PSU is supplied with this NAS? Wall-wart with 12v cable, or brick type with IEC input connector with 12v trailing off?

ok ta means I can use my UPS with it. I want to use the single disc partition type (jdisc?) can you fit one hard drive later, or do both have to be initialized at the same time?

Is there anyway that the unit can read NTFS? I have 500GB of data and transferring all that onto my other machines/usb hd/iriver then back again will be long process.
 
you can enable/fit one disc at a time.remember though that it uses a linux ext file system.you will need some software to read the hdd if you take the hdd out of the enclosure and put it in a pc.also i reccomend you ditch the supplied lan cable.i used it and spent an hour trying to get it to work at 1000
ditched the supplied cable and instant 1000(providing you have 1000 at both ends of course :D

nope unit won`t read NTFS :(
 
Are you using the firmware from the US or UK site? The US site has more up to date firmware, but comes with a warning.

This firmware is engineered for US products only. Using this firmware on a device outside of the United States will void your warranty and may render the device unusable

I don't know why I can't get 100mps LAN to work :( Transferring 500GB over 10mps LAN is going to take forever.

Asus A8R32-MVP Deluxe :
Asus A8N-CSM
Billion 7300A DSL modem/gateway/hub

My LAN cables are CAT5, and not that long in length (3-5M)
 
am using firmware that shipped with the enclosure.is it cat 5E cable?and is the other lan card (and switch,if using one) rated at at least 100?
check speed settings on the nas and your pc/switch/lan card too :)
 
Those three components are rated to 100mbps. Tried auto sense and manual 100 full. The cables say

Cardinal cables 24 awg pair high performance utp patch cable for category 5 systems
 
mmmm well i know i am using cat5 E here,i am sorry i am not sure about cat 5.is it capable of 100 mbps?
all i can suggest is recheck all connections,swap cables if possible
have you set 100 in the nas too?
 
Just a warning if you are thinking of storing large files on the DNS-323 - all the firmware (including the latest) has a problem.

Files 2-4Gb, 6-8Gb and 10-12Gb will fail to copy with a "There's not enough space on the drive" error despite there being sufficient space on the unit.

strange :confused: i have transfered loads of folders over 4 gig and not had any errors like that,firmware that shipped with the unit too.or do you mean something like a large AVI or vob file?
 
I've read that too, I thought the "large file problems" are with itunes? I would just be using Windows Explorer and copying it over the LAN.

A single file or a folder of files over 4GB ?

Trying to copy a single 2.49 GB (2,678,614,016 bytes) iso gave the error for me with v1.02b and 240GB free on the DNS-323 :(
 
using firmware 1.01
am transfering a 10 gb folder of avi files and a 2.77 g mpeg at the momemt......going ok so far :)
on a side note am only getting 20-30% in networking/task manager :( i would have expected much more as it is 1gb networked and even at 30% that equates to only 300k doesn`t it?
