D-link Router Problems, it need RMA'd?

I've got a D-Link DSL-524T ADSL2+ router. It's about a month old but I've had this problem from about day 1. I'm new to networking so I don't know is it a hardware or settings problem.

My internet will work fine but suddenly the connection gets dropped. I don't think its anything to do with my broadband provider as when I turn the power to the router off and then back on, it starts to work again for a few hours before it happens again.

My broadband provider is Tiscali. The whole connection being dropped thing seems to happen the most often when I'm using bittorrent or FTP to download files.

There's two computers connected to the router and I've set the router to assign static IP's to them both. The router is still set up as a DHCP server. I tried turning that off briefly and manually assigning IP's to each computer but I still had problems.

I've input the DNS servers Tiscali recommended into the router as well.

Anyone know my problem? Is it bad settings or a busted router?

Thanks for your help in advance. Any help at all is appreciated as this is getting real annoying.
 
I'm on the latest non-beta version of the firmware already.

Currently searching the forums to see what's wrong with Tiscali but I don't see how me needing to reset the power to my router every hour is a fault with tiscali

So far all I've read about tiscali is their poor CS, fair usage policy, and traffic shaping. All of which I already knew about before I signed up to it.

None of this explains why I get kicked off the internet every hour and have to turn my router off and and back on before I can connect again.

sorry for the lack of reply, I was home for christmas there.

My flatmates tell me that the problem is still there. I don't think it has anything to do with Tiscali as the connection returns instantly when I reboot the router.

This leads me to believe that it is a problem with the D-link router.

I'm trying the beta version of the firmware just now to see if there is any improvement

Just to add a little more detail to what happens on the router when the problem occurs.

The D-link router has 3 lights on the left hand side. They are the Power, Status, and ADSL lights. When all is fine; the power light is on, the status light blinks, and the ADSL light blinks.

When the router/connection screws up, the Status light remains on but does not blink, and the ADSL light turns off. As soon as I reboot the router, by cutting the power, all the lights return to normal straight away.

Thought I'd post an update on the problem.

D-Link in the UK have THE worst website for technical help ever. They make you sign up for something to ask for help, but that section has nothing of relevance or anything that works.

Trying to download manuals or firmware from their site is made harder by the fact none of the HTTP links work (and this is not due to my connection as I tried in uni as well as my mates house). I had to use FTP to get the files, which was a challenge to look for as they weren't exactly placed in the most logical of places.

Their FAQ isn't exactly useful and they don't have a forum either. All they got is some 0870 number you can call for help, but I'm sure not phoning to be put on hold for god knows how long.

But apart from the shockingly bad CS, I flashed the latest beta firmware onto the router, and it's been working like a charm since. Used to get connection drop-outs every few hours, now, the last time I had one was 4 days ago
 
ah, sorry for the late reply. Not been on the overclockers forums for a long while now. Been too busy with university work.

The D-Link website is terrible and the website support is even worse. The HTTP downloads don't work either.

To get the beta firmware, you gotta use their FTP site and then look through the directories for the firmware. At least most of the directories are clearly marked so finding it through FTP isn't that tricky, for mine at least.

To get to the FTP section, go to the dlink homepage, click support in the top and there is a link that says FTP. Just open it up with some FTP client, I use Filezilla.

*EDIT* actually, to make things easier, the FTP address is ftp.dlink.co.uk
Just connect to that and look for the beta. You might have to compare the file numbers from the technical webpage as some of them aren't marked beta, just a bunch of numbers and letters

do you have the same router as me? the DSL-524T? Is it the same problem you're having?

The firmware I'm runnin is V3.00B01T02.UK-A.20060621. It said beta at one stage on their website. It doesn't say that any more though.

When connecting to ftp.dlink.co.uk, I found the firmware in: dsl_routers_modems > DSL-524T > DSL-524T_FW_V3.00B01T02.UK-A.20060621.zip

That's the latest one. The zip file ending in 209 is the shipping firmware. Hope this helps
