D-link router wireless is hanging

We recently got a new ISP and the router they sent was a D-link 2047R.
It's not an issue with the internet itself, that stays connected all the time. It is the wireless network that keeps failing me.
I got frustrated and did a -t ping test on the router and left the lappy sat next to it, it keeps intermittently saying that the host destination cannot be reached or that request failed, then goes back to responding at 600ms or something and then the next reply is 1ms or something. Has any1 had experience with D-link routers doing this before? I have tested it on another D-link router and the same router on my home connection and it is the same deal. When I tested it on my trusty old ST585v6, the connection was perfect!

Is there anything I should be looking out for? I have downgraded the firmware to the original revision of 1.05 and worked upward to the most recent with no joy. When I plug in the ethernet it's fine. So it is definitely the wireless. (the other D-link router was a friends that was a 2780 talktalk handout).

Thanks in advance for all the help and any other info you need I can provide.

Steve.

It seems that the only machine in the house that is having significant trouble it the Toshiba lappy I am using to do the diagnostics. Is there an issue with the wireless chipset in the toshiba that has trouble with the n draft routers?

Wireless card is RTL8188CE - I did some more digging now that I know it's the tosh and it does appear as if there is an issue with toshiba's and d-links. Any1 have a work around? The drivers are all up to date and from what I read, it appears the later drivers also had issues with this. I did read something interesting about toshiba using a 3rd party driver that is basically a sack of steaming .... But I don't believe everything I read on the internet. Does any1 have any further info that I could use?

OK, It seems I have been my own help, which is rare, I'm usually self destructive.

I had a happy coincidence when the power started to run low on the lappy. I plugged the power in and heypresto! No more hanging???!!!?? I started to run a -t ping on the router to test the connection and I had no issues with all responses being below 3ms and mostly below 1. When I unplugged the power again. BOOM! Request failed. Plug it back in and bam! It works again. It appears as though the power settings only have issues with the D-link routers though as this lappy has been connected to many networks without power.

**FIXES**
It appears as though different things work for different situations.
1. Uncheck the box in power management (Device manager>network adapters>realtek...>properties) that allows the computer to turn the device off.

2. This one was a bit wierd. Go to the advanced tab and enable 802.11d ??? Still confused as to how this worked for any1.

3. Go to the realtek site and update the Wlan drivers for your card

4. Change from balanced power to performance.

5. Plug the power in.

If any1 can come up with a sensible workaround that means none of the above need to be tried, that would be excellent.
If sum1 could come up with a guide to toshiba laptop wireless with troubleshooting and solves, that would be a time saving sticky!
