got one of these off virgin media for their 50mb broadband.

it's nice and quick etc.

but when i max out my connection it cuts out completely.

in the admi pages it still shows the ip address it's getting from the modem and everything looks ok, to get it to work again i have to either reboot the router or release/renew the ip address.

i've tried a firmware update but no cigar.
someone suggested checking the MTU and setting it to the same as that on the modem, however, i can't find that in the modem's admin pages at all.

any ideas?

This is a well known 'feature' of the DIR-615. It seems VM only supplied it because it was, well, cheap. IIRC the 615 is limited to a maximum of 30 connections, and it's not exactly quick at recycling them; all of which means it dies petty quickly once you're running multi threaded downloads (NNTP, bittorrent, etc).

Best bet in the long run is to simply replace it with something that actually works. Buy or build a proper router and the job's a good un. :)

gonna give dd wrt a go, thanks.

i do fancy a new router though, something dual band to go with my new wifi card, lot of access points in our wee street, can't tell what channel they're all on, would be good to just ditch them all at channel 12 and get better signal.

If connections are an issue then dd-wrt seems like a good bet as you can alter connection limits up to something silly like 4000 (though in reality you'd be okay with 500 or so).

i think dd-wrt limits it to 4096.

this router shouldnt be used without dd-wrt, its basically useless without it and worth about £5, and with dd-wrt it will beat some £100 routers.

once you've DD-WRT installed your lights may turn orange/red so in the commands section enter this:

gpio disable 9; gpio enable 8; gpio disable 12; gpio enable 14 ; sleep 15 ; gpio disable 11 ; gpio enable 13

then they all go back to normal.

Was wondering about why the lights had changed colour, thanks :)

well i done'd it, it didn't brick my router and i was able to get wifi working with a wpa key without too many difficulties. lots of technical looking settings in there which i don't want to **** with (only ever used cheap routers!) so i'll just leave it alone.

didn't notice an issue with the lights and to be honest it wouldn't bother me either way.

i'll fire up the desktop later and do some serious stress testing courtesy of utorrent.

thanks for all your help people!

I have had great success with this router from virgin media. The first one lasted about 8 months before the physical ethernet port failed for the Internet into the router, that was a D2 hardware revision. It was able to max out my 50mb connection 24/7 with no issue (6400KB/s down).

I received a D4 hardware revision from virgin as a replacement, it was just as good, I have now flashed it with DD-WRT and it's got a better wireless signal somehow. DD-WRT says it has a max of 1024 connections or something very similar to that number. Overall I really like this router, it's never dropped the connection even under the hardest torrent load or intense server refreshing.

yeah, somehow i think your on dlink's payroll lad.

anyways...

HELP!!

DD-WRT killed wireless N. only G will work.
any ideas before i blow a ton on a new rooter?

i noticed i had only 4 signal bars on my pc upstairs, it's usually 5 so i hit status and seen it was at 54mbps, so i did a few tests and found that if i select ONLY wireless N, the connection drops and nothing can connect wirelessly, i had to ethernet into it and change it to mixed G & N mode.

802.11N is brown bread.

I had a few of these, but again... newsgroups just spiked, 2.2mb download to 128k, nothing was stable, i sold it and got myself another Linksys.

Anyone wanna buy a Router, in the same thread you express your very reason for sale,
