I can get the 100D w/ 24mm EF-S 2.8 STM and 55-250mm STM lenses for £531.55 or the D3300 w/ 35mm DX 1.8 and Tamron 70-300 VC lenses for £648.

On the Canon side, the 24mm is wider and possibly of less use than the 35 on the Nikon. The zoom has less reach and is a cheaper offering, but it's quite good optically according to reviews. The 100D has much less battery life than the D3300 and a much older sensor.

In terms of bodies, they're both pretty light and compact. I've used a 100D before, and whilst not the comfiest to hold, it was good enough.

My feeling is that the Nikon setup is probably worth the extra in the long run, for the better lenses. If Canon weren't offering £70 cashback on those three items at the moment vs £20 from Nikon, the decision would be simpler.

Thoughts?

Personally i always tend to go with the manufacturer with the best (value for money) lenses - i cant and never will afford the £1000+ lenses.

You can always part ex your body for a better one later if required. Lens dont tend to change much. And once you have gone down one system, its unlikely you will change as that will mean swapping all your lenses.

But even after saying all of that, i have no idea how the lenses compare or the bodies compare so can only give general advice.

btw 250mm vs 300mm isnt much different and if the shorter lens is sharper in conjunction with a better sensor then cropped it can be a better picture.

Take the lens i have on my camera - 80-300 equiv. I've not taken many shots yet but most reviews seem to say that its pretty sharp to 200 but soft as butter at 300m and cropped 200mm shots look better than shots taken at 300mm.

I presume from you saying you wont use the 24mm on the canon that you don't/won't take landscape shots? 24mm would be the longest I would cope with personally for landscape. 35mm more ideally suited to street photography although for family shots, you should get some nice bokeh with f1.8.

EDIT: The nikon body seems to have one of the best sensors in its class and subjective takes much better quality pics than the canon. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikon-d3300/12

2nd EDIT: Just realised the cameras are APS-C so the 24mm is really 36mm and the nikon lens is really 51mm which is the perfect "nifty" fifty prime lens. That tamron is a monster at 105-450mm effective and would be good for wildlife etc.

ALl really depends on what you plan to shoot with the camera.
