ok as the title says pump types and parts im looking at the D5 but i see 3 types

1, D5 Pump with Tachosignal ?

2,D5 PWM Pump ?

3, D5 Vario

i no that pump 3 in the list has a speed setting dial on it .but for the other two do they need a controller/software or do they run straight off the motherboard or ?

also is it best to buy a pre built pump ready to run or buy parts and build it your self.

hopefully some one can shead light on this a bit more

I think 1 and 3 are the same thing. I what the tachosignal refers to is that it includes a fan header that tells your system the RPM of the pump but is controlled by the twisty nobby thing on the bottom. But afaik all D5 varios include the fan header.

The PWM pump has a tachosignal as well but is controlled by the fan header too. So if you choose this make sure you have a way of controlling it.

Finally I would choose a pre built pump as they are no more expensive and it is one less thing to worry about.

I haven't thought about that.

I would hope it will run at 100% but I don't know for sure. Might be worth asking EK or finding someone who owns one.

I own a D5 PWM myself.

And no, if it is not ran with PWM connected it will not run at full speed.

It will run at about 56% of max speed if no PWM signal is connected.

I have a D5 vario with tacho signal (non PWM). The tacho lead is on a monitored motherboard header so if the pump fails the system will shut down and not cook anything.

I don't vary pump speed once it's set and I'm happy with the circulation /temps/noise so no point in the PWM for me, I always run them straight from the PSU.

As long as the MB can see the pump speed via the fan header then you should be able to connect to one that will alert/shutdown if it drops below a set threshold. You'll need to check your motherboard manual/bios.
