I was considering this as opposed to the canon 350d but in some of the reviews ive read in the samples the pics are nowhere near as sharp as the canon - I would like to know if this is just down to the kit lens and if the d50 performs nicely with a better lens on it?

They're basically the same. The lens will make the difference.

The SD / CF card difference is what smung it for me in the end (as well as owning a G5 before). Already had a decent amount of CF cards floating about, so picking up the 350D over the D50 saved me a little cash initially.

What with L glass, grips, filters et al, that soon changed....

What lens would you recommend to replace the kit lens for ~200 quiddos - mainly just a walkabout lens or one for portraits - ive heard the 50mm prime is good?

Its good but it has a limited range. I'd say the Canon 28-105 or 135mm. Great walkabout lens.

Do you mean the Nikon or the Canon?

If the Nikon get the 18-70 as a kit lens instead of the 18-55. Its a superior lens. :)

yea i was talking about the nikon :) Nowhere I can find does it with the 18-70 :(
Damn. I thought this was possible. Maybe get an 18-70 from HK via ebay? I think they are around £150 plus del and VAT.

Tell a lie - I have found one. £500 with the lens, pretty good actually :)
Good stuff. In terms of Nikon lenses, the 18-70 cant really be beaten unless you have around £1k for the 17-35.

really? Im surprised they would give such a good lens as the kit lens
Its a pretty good lens, but its not perfect. The other thing is that there isnt much inbetween.

Why would they not? Certainly gets people buying the gear if they supply you with quality from the start. Unfortunately Canon's kit lens is appauling in my opinion.

When compared to the 17-40L and 50mm prime, for sure.
Still, I'm finding that if you stick the kit lens at 55mm, focus to infinity (and wedge it with some bluetac) and whack it on extension tubes it makes for a rather spiffy macro lens.

You mean the 17-55 G lens?

There are other Nikkors that are better than the 18-70 but they of course do cost a lot more! but the ideal combo is really something like a nikkor 12-24, nikkor 18-70 and then the nikkor 70-200 2.8 VR ;)

I don't think the 18-70 can be beaten by any lens under £500 though in terms of quality, AF speed/noise, range and sharpness though! if only it were 2.8..

we bought my brother a D50 for his birthday and i was appaulled by the plastic body and stupidly toy looking lens that came with it. The controls are nice but the shutter click sounds clunky and cheap.

I would never recommend a D50 over the 350D frankly :o

I found out a mate at work has a d200 and a bunch of lenses (forget which ones now) so I may be able to steal some off him hopefully :D
