Hi All

Currently i have the D50 with the 18-200VR, I am thinking of selling the D50 Body and upgrading but not sure whether i should go for D80, D200 or D300 ?

Any advise please on which Body would be best with the 18-200 VR

Thx

Well the 'best' camera of those listed is the D300. But a more important questions is; Why are you upgrading? Are there any feature you feel you lack, is there anything that annoys you about the D50 and is there anything in particular that you like in the D50 that you would also like in a new body?

Partly because i'd like to have a newer body and get something back for the D50 whilst it still has some value left and a bigger LCD screen, Battery grip also. I'd also like to keep my 2GB Sandisk II SD card, so i guess only have the choice of D80. Not sure what else ?

Is it really worth narrowing your choice by hanging on to the SD card though? You can pick up a 2Gb Compact Flash card for £15 or less. If you can afford it I would seriously go for the D300. Great high ISO noise, sensor cleaning, liveview etc etc. Im very tepted by one myself, but im probably going for the D2X/D2Xs instead for the pro body with built in grip, better weather sealing etc.

yeah need to specifiy budget, and what is 'wrong' with the D50 really. mine does some slighlty annoying things, but nothing to tempt me into buying a new body (unless they bring out a stablised body in my price range!)

Slight OT, but that aint ever going to happen. Nikon make they're lenses stabilised, not the bodies. For the most effective stabilisation, you want it as far forward as possible and calibrated for the lens in use. My ideal body would be something like a D300 (But with the IR sensitivity of the D70s) in a pro body.

So a D3? :p

trousers. looks like i'l be needing a 10-20 (ish) VR then!

yeah, its for UE. i do use the tripod whenever i can, but there are some times when it is just not possible to either take it with me, or set it up. I am being fussy really, i am coping without VR.. it'd just be nice to have.

I've been known to shoot handheld at 1/30th with the Sigma 10-20, it's an extremely forgiving lens. I also went form a D50 to a D200 and never looked back. There's nothing wrong particularly with the D50, but the D200 just does everything a little bit better and has superb ergonomics. The D300 does look incredibly yummy too.

Well isn't the rule of thumb for avoid camera shake 1/focal length.
That's what I use, I often end up shooting for a 1/10th with my 10-20.

And if you're even half-steady you can go further depending on your stance/hold.

Back to topic...
I too have a D50, but if I had the money (£600ish) I'd want a second hand D200. The main reasons for this upgrade would be:
-on body controls (no more menu pushing for metering, bracketing etc)
-better iq
-higher resolution
-better hold (I assume, don't think I've actually held one :P )
-better noise handling (for gigs/indoors stuff)
-commander flash mode stuff (to trigger my SB600)
-metering with old manual lenses (I love my 'Cimko' 28mm f2.8, at £12 it was a bargain, but with a D50 metering is full manual. I'm pretty sure the D200 can meter for old lenses.)
-to look the business

I wouldn't go for the D80 though, http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d80/vs-d200.htm

thx for the input guys, well i have read a bit on DPreviews and it seems the D80 is going to be phased out soon, so i guess it wil be either a 2nd hand D200 or a D300, as i am going to New York in January i hope to pick one up there in the Sales

i have a D50

on body controls (no more menu pushing for metering, bracketing etc)

you can do all the metering, bracketing etc from the on camersa buttons and dial without going into the menu (i saw a speed review thing once and had a go, and found with the right combination of buttons dial you can do it all)

ok mayb ei was wrong. just had another play and cant find how i changed metering on the body

I found how to change flash exposure compensation only recently, hold the flash button with ev comp button and scroll...

But yeah, you really can't change bracketing or metering without the menu.

oh cool ken "tripods are obsolete" rockwell
Meh, it's a useful site I think, for the non-pro photographer with a budget.
