Recently bought my first dslr, so lack experience with problem's which can occur. Bought a 3rd party battery, which had good reviews on the rainforest, and supposed to be compatible with the the D5100.

It initially worked. After I charged it for a second time, it now shows this error message 'this battery cannot be used. Choose battery designated for use in this camera'. I've tried Google, but cannot seem to find an answer.

Any help mucho appreciated.

I looked at 3rd party batteries for my D3100. IIRC most new nikons require an official battery as they have a microchip in which tells the camera the stare of the battery. 3rd party batteries can be used as the 2nd battery in a grip which allows the use of two batteries. This wouldn't explain however why it worked once.

As mentioned above the D5100 like other new Nikons are notorious for not liking after market batteries. I would send it back and buy a genuine one. They are not that expensive really. I manage with 2 batteries as they last for ever in the D5100 as long as you don't use live view all the time.

I never knew about the microchip in the batteries. That explains why it doesn't work, but not why it worked the first time round. I'll look into getting a battery grip, cheers.

this is the one I got for my D5100 and is working fine, this the same on you got?

No, the battery I bought was Maxsima-foto. I was unaware of the microchip needed in the battery. If that one works without the grip, I might buy one of those.

Tried putting the Nikon one in and swapping back to generic one?

Yes, same result. I'll keep the battery, in case I get a grip in future.

I have added a grip to mine also, there is a pic of it on my D5100 in this thread and its not bad for just £24.99
