I am thinking of moving over to the d200 just wondering if any one has any experiance with moving over, any suggestions, ideas, comments, or reasons for against it or its brothers and sisters.

Thanks!

I cant really give any useful advice as I havent gone over yet but I have a D70 and am considering the same. I would love a second body and my wallet shouts "BUY A D50" but something lurking inside tells me to get a D200. I shoot a lot of motorsport and the extra FPS would do me well.

I love all my Nikon gear but I will say that I think the D200 is a rip price wise. I think the 30D is a very worthy rival and even without looking at importing, can be had for £800. How Nikon think that their body is worth and extra £400 I do not know?????

I do think that £330 for a D50 on the highstreet is a real bargain though if you are looking for a spare body!

I have a D200 & a D70. I was going to sell the D70 but decided to keep it as a backup.
Suggestions....... get one.
Pros..... well obviuosly 10.2 Meg pix, 5 fps, faster autofocus, bigger & brighter viewfinder, the list goes on.
Cons.... well only one really, max flash sync of 1/250 sec as opposed to 1/500th on the D70.
The build quality is better & it "feels" better in the hand.
Some Sigma lenses need to be re-chipped for the AFS-ON button to work, but Sigma will do this for free.
There were some concerns with "banding" on the first batch which was due to poor quality control with regard to calibrating the digital / analogue circuits of the sensor but that has been sorted now. Any early batch cameras which had the proble were re calibrated by Nikon servic dept.

EVen though a lot of people said the D200 would fix a lot of the noise issues, is this actually true in the field?
YES.

I have produced several 15" x 10" prints from files shot at 800asa / iso with no sign of any noise.
I find comments of noise with digital slr cameras quite commical really - just remember the huge chunks of grain we used to get with 400 asa film.

I haven't used a D200, But I have to say that they look very attractive. (and I'm a Canon junkie, got me years ago and once you have a bit of kit, it's really difficult to switch). the price is a little high for me just now, but in 6 months I'm sure it will below a grand. The only thing that I don't like too much about it, is the reports of noisy(ish) higher ISO's.

Personally, I'm still debating whether to jump on a 30D or wait to see if there is a response in the Autumn (though I don't think its time for the 30D product to be refreshed)

I've had some a LOT bigger than that printed for clients recently from my D200 and there are no noise problems what so ever, and the origionals were shot in JPG  (motorsport!)

The D200 is awsome...but the D2XS is better :p

I got the impression that the D200 was a good deal better than the 30D, including not only higher resolution, but also very nice detailing like weather sealing, which is only available on the Canon 1D series.
Strikes me that the D200 is the dogs nuts, and I'm a Canon user.

Aye, the D200 is a hard body to compare to the competition - because there isn't really anything at the same price point.
Some compare to the 30D, some to the 5D, but both are bizarre comparisons, really.

Exactly, if you're looking for something in that price range and aren't tied to a system it's the one to go for.

Sounds like a good deal, I will be waiting for a bit just to see what happens, and also to let the price drop a bit, my main reasons for upgrading are the battery grip, higher res and improved configurability. I also currently have the kit d70 lens and the Sigma 28-300mm f3.5-4.8, however I didnt know if I should also look at buying a new lens?

I would upgrade your lenses before your camera body if I were you. Look in my sig for inspiration if you like :) :p

Ah, yes - looking at what lenses you have, you're likely to get more out of spending the cash on decent glass. Or decent glass & a D200 ¬_¬.

As Joe says, what do you like to shoot?
