D700 vs D800 High ISo noise comparisons

The D800 are downsampled by 57% to normalisze resolution to the D700 for fair comparisons.

The D800 looks to have an amazing sensor. The D800 to me looks to have at least 1 stop better noise performance. D700 as ISO 6400 is slightly worse than D800 at ISO 12800, same at 12800 with the D700 and 25600 with the D800.

Other sample shots online seems to show similar patterns and it appears the D800 equals or better the D700 at native resolutions, so is about 1.5 stops better overall.

Tbh I'v been confident for a while that ISO would be pretty good.
Seems like this is going to be one hell of a camera in almost every way possible other than FPS...

I might get one sooner rather than later...

I never doubted that Nikon wouldn't produce a sensor with good performance but I guess I under-estimated their ability to produce a sensor with such performance at such a high resolution.

Seems like the D800 will blow the D3x out of the water at less than half the price point.

Glad I have the D800E on pre-order, and first in the queue. Never doubted how good this camera would be ! I think it'll be a very versatile camera, with the lowish frame rate it's only weakness ( for some ).

I thought it was a Sony produced sensor on the D800? :confused:

Sony fabricated, just like all Nikon sensor for the last x years and many sensors from different camera manufactures (there aren't many facilities in the world that fab a high end sensor). It is like Nvidia using TMSC to fab the GPUs, doesn't make the GPU a TMSC design.

The details of the design work is no really known yet. Considering Sony hasn't yet released or announced a FF camera with a similar spec sensor then it probably means that the sensor is of Nikon design. For previous sensors that Sony designed and Nikon tweaked Sony released or announced first. Even with Sony designed sensors, Nikon do a lot of internal tweaking. The D3x sensor is a classic case where it far outperforms the version found in the Sony A900/850. Even some of the Sony designed sensor are actually a combination of both Sony and Nikon collaboration.
