D90 or D5000?

Yup, what m3csl2004 said.

A good source of review, you can also watch their video review too.

I personally would say look at a variety; be it Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus or Pentax. Then look at their lens range, prices for future upgrades (if that's going to be your thing, trust me, you'll get hooked) and then try them in a stall to see if you actually like holding it.

With canon it doesn't matter as all EF mount lenses have inbuilt motors.

The opposing view here being all Nikon AF-S lenses have inbuilt motors, but nicely it's still F-mount - so retains backwards compatibility with older lenses (albeit no AF with the D40/60/3000/5000).

The Canon or the Nikon, you can't really lose. I'd take the D90.

ah. Thanks

Is the Canon 500D better than the Nikon D90 then?

Thanks

I'd go for the D90 personally. Both the D90 and the 500D have internal screw drives, but almost all modern lenses have their own AF motors anyway.

Also, as Mud said, with a D90 you can use pretty much any Nikon lens from the last 40 years with no problem (though the older the lens is, the fewer features it'll have, obviously).

To clarify, the D90 retains AF on all AF lenses, but no metering on old AI/AI-S manual focus lenses. Pre-AI lenses will potentially damage the camera.

Hi,

I am looking at buying a new SLR camera.

Do I go for the D90 or D5000?

Which one is better?

Thanks

Define better?

I would go for the D90, but only if this means you do not compromise on lenses. If you have to buy a cheaper lens to afford the D90 then buy the D5000.

The IQ is basically the same.

Seriously think about he 16-85mm over the 18-105 kit lens. The 16 vs 18mm is much, much nicer than the 105 vs 85.

With 16mm you may be able to save a lot of money by not buying an UWA like a 10-24mm.

Another lens to consider is the new Tamron 17-50 2.8 VC (although I am not sure if it is available yet).

The D90 is the better camera in general. But the Canon 500D is still very good.

The D90 matches closer with the Canon 50D though, well maybe between the 500D and 50D.

I upgraded earlier this year from D40X to D90, and i love it!

I have not tried any mid high end canons so cant coment.

From what Ive read I'd say the D90 was far superior and a much better choice than the D5000.

That said i really do like the swivel screen on the D5000. I have one on my crappy Canon point and shoot and its really useful. Whether its taking self portraits or just taking a really awkward shot where the camera needs to be near to the ground, the screen makes it very easy.

I'd love to see this implemented into the successor to the D90, although a fear it will be seen as a gimmick by most armature photographers and so will be kept to the lower range of DSLRs. I wouldn't want the screen quality to be compromised for this feature though and would want the higher res screen (as used on the D90) to be made into a swivel screen.

Reading up about the D90 is really making me want to upgrade from my D80, but as Ive only had this camera a year I'm going to hold off for a while. Maybe wait for the successor to the D90 and then decide whether i want a cheap D90 or the newest model.
