Hey guys,

I’m just in the process of setting a friend up with broadband and they’ve just been notified with >

“Please be advised that BT have contacted us regarding your activation on
line number 00000000000.

Their suppliers advised that the order is delayed due to DACS on line and
they are currently awaiting further details.”

I’ve never heard this one before? What’s DACS :(

Cheers,

SW.

Christ, thought they'd all gone by now!

DACS (Digital Access Carrier System) is a line sharing device. If BT were short of lines, they can shove a DACS on it. It takes two lines from the exchange, combines them onto one line using some digital multiplexing, then another unit at the other end to split them out again.

ADSL, unsurprisingly, won't work over DACS... and BT have been avoiding using them for years now.

The delay will just be because they have to send an engineer out to remove it (and find a spare line!)

My mate’s house is literally in the middle of nowhere :p

Annoyingly though, he can get faster MAX than me, and I live in a town…

Cheers,

SW.

Be warned, the estimate will be complete crap.
As said, ADSL won't work over DACS, and given he's going to have to be shifted onto a different copper pair, there's no way to estimate what he'll get. You might find that the answer's nothing.

Not sure what makes you say BT have been avoiding using them for years, they definately havent. I've just changed jobs but up until last month I worked for a BT reseller and I know for sure that lines are still being DACS'd in areas where capacity is an issue.

Sam - As Tolien said, your friend may well end up not being able to have BB at all.
