Howzit guys,

My Dad is looking to upgrade his old nVidia 6800GT card. At the moment, he's looking at a 7600GS or a 8600GS, I think the 8600GS is a better card. But could he do any beter for a card around that price?

I'd avoid the 8600 Series, they don't generally give enough grunt to justify their price.

Do you have any idea of his general budget and what games or applications he needs it for?

get ** self a 8800GTS and u be happy!!!

He doesn't have enough money for that. Otherwise, obviously that is the obvious choice. Since we're not in the Uk, I am guesing around a price of a 8600gt.is the budget?

Don't get any 8 series card below an 8800 GTS 320MB. Below that, x1950 Pro is (still) the card of choice. Below that, 7600 GT is quite reasonable (although won't be a lot faster than your 6800).

Budget and AGP/PCI-E would help.

I don't know about SA, but 7800's might be a bit hard to find now?

I don't know if this is over his budget, but it's an 8600GT, scores approx 4500 in 3dMark06, and should be a good overclocker. Good cooler too and doesn't need any additional power.

It's also DX10 compatible, so potentially a bit more future proof? May be important to him if he doesn't change his hardware until he needs to? (Unlike most of us on here! ;) )

get the BFG 8800gts 320 as it comes with a lifetime warranty unless you want to overclock it, but if he wants stalker on a really nice crisp setting get the gts.

If someone one got a x1950 Pro how long would he get from it and would he be gutted he never goy the 8800gts 320mb

If you can afford the 8800 GTS then get it. The biggest gap in the graphics market is between the 8800 GTS 320MB and the card slower than it.
