Hi,

This maybe a stupid question but I'm hoping you can advise me. I currently have 8gb of HyperX Genesis DDR3 1600MHz CL9 RAM in my PC. I have however recently been given 4x 4gb of kingston KTD-XPS730BS/4G

Obviously 16gb is better than 8gb however am I better of sticking with the 8gb, it certainly looks more the part so whether its faster or runs better due to the cooling on it I don't know. Please can someone give me some advice on this one

Ignore the 'cooling' thats decoration.

Looking up that code suggests the 16GB is 1333MHz rather than 1600MHz so slightly slower but not too bad.

Which would be better for you is a hard question as there are advantages each way. If 8GB is a limit you actually reach then the extra capacity may give you significant gains, but if not then there is no real advantage in swapping at the moment (though in future use may go up of course with different software etc)

Increasing will potentially reduce your maximum achievable overclock as the IMC will be working harder from the increase in capacity and also having 4 sticks rather than 2 causes some reduction in max OC in some cases. The drop in frequency is also a down side but not a significant one assuming decent timings (I skimmed quickly when googling the part number, sorry, dunno!). Assuming you're not on an x79 platform thus no quad channel for you having 4 sticks isn't an advantage beyond capacity.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm not doing any overclocking on it so that wouldnt be an issue and I probably don't max out the 8gb that I have either, just mainly internet, music & a the odd game running on a i5 3570k.

I guess im best of just sticking with the 8gb then would you say?
